player minimap improvement...
« on: July 05, 2003, 04:25:06 pm »
well of course there is no minimap for the players to see at the moment, but I think a good system of map would be really apreciated by players ;

So with this post I want to ask the dev\'s what they have in mind...

Anyway I have my opinion about it, and hope to discuss with you all : first the map should enable zoom, even in 2d ; on it there would be a fog of war of course, for the places you haven\'t seen yet (you would also get rid of this fog by joining an explorer guild or buying a map at the cartographer\'s); it would be great to be able to add your own comments on certain points of the map like ; \"see again, treasure perhaps hidden there\" and so on, so that it would be easier to travel ; and finally, after having visited it, it would be great to see an icon for what kind of monsters live in a specific place ....

ok that\'s it ; what\'s your opinion

I like it, I like it very much. :)

In addition to those suggestions, I think a coloured-coded system of symbols representing things like doors and NPCs would be nice.

At the moment, unless you\'re already familiar with the world, you can\'t easily tell who is an NPC and who is a PC. Using the minimap you could pinpoint their locations and know that the person now standing infront of you is a bot and not a real person. :)

see i like the original idea but i dont like mogura\'s. Things like doors and npcs would be too tiny because the world already is so big. Also it would be a stupid idea to do that with npc\'s as well because then you would know where quests or other things would be hidden. PLus you can already tell who is an npc, they either have a first and last name or they have a wierd name like Dur\'hum or something.

NPC\'s are the only ones who have a lastname :) But, as you stated, if you dont know the game..

Not all NPCs have lastnames, and as for strange names... well Roleplayers will be Roleplayers, know what I mean?

As for the minimap, do you really think I would suggest that on a map that displays the *entire world*? A minimap is a part of the GUI that is always visible and shows your position in the current location, city, dungeon etc. Doors and NPCs would be clearly visible in the minimap, but you\'re right, it would be stupid to put such things on a *world map*.

Well I like the ideas proposed here.

Minimap, colourcoded for a set of standard icons will be great. Fog of war idea is excellent especially if the fog can be lifted in several ways

* Buy a map
* Travel through the area

and a new suggestion

* If players join together in a quest they can pool their knowledge of places and features. I.e. all of them get the available info on their minimaps once they \"officially\" band together on a quest.

If and how the last suggestion can be done I don\'t know, but if you don\'t ask you\'ll never know.  :P

i agree with the ways to lift fog of war, but i think this should only reveal the geography of the place, not where the NPC are.
For NPCs player must detect them to see them on the map (maybe a skill or a roll on some stats). With bigger, louder, moving NPC easier to detect small, quietly and nonmoving NPC.

well indeed I didn\'t think of the npc\'s..they really could be anoying, I mean searching for a npc you have seen already but you don\'t remeber where.....man it happened in baldur\'s gate for me and god it was awfull...

My suggestion is a bit of in between

Let\'s say, the programmers have a point system that they see :
there would be level 1 npc = those who give a side quest
level 2 npc = quest for important and significant items
level 3 npc = global quest, quest of high importance

It would be great to enable in your option a setting that will make you able to \"remeber\" those npc\'s ; let me be clearer

If in the option menu I check the \"remeber level 3 npc\'s\", then each time I have talked to a level 3 npc, there would be in the dialo box something like :

\"Mark this level 3 npc on the map ? yes/no\" ; and to avoid players of getting bored, this question would disaper 20 seconds later( so you don\'t have to switch the mouselook just to answer \"no\" )

I hope I was clear lol

Your opinion ?

I like that... But i think that it sould ask that for every NPC that have some event connected to it.. And 20 secound is a bit long, 10 maby, but i dont think we sould think to much about that, it isn\'t even sure that this will be in the game

wait so why are we talking about that ?

it\'s meant to give ideas to the dev\'s, so if you say to each thread \"come on we stop talking it isn\'t sure it will be included\" well it\'s the end of the wish forum !!!

Hehe sorry, what I meant by that was alot of players will undoubtedly have strange names like Kuhdrag or Msuhalei... well you can probably tell I\'m not one of them, considering I can\'t think of any better examples. :D

well your name would then be on the buddy list, whereas npc\'s would be on the map ; and I also hope we\'ll have a decent quest book to know what to do !!
