Vengeance, how 'bout you split this forum
« on: July 09, 2003, 09:00:34 pm »
Not meaning to be a rable-rouser, but...

The Wish List forum provides a wider range of ideas and faster refinement and propagation.

The SF feature requests provide a more easily browsable set of requests with more closure to each idea.

I think you can get the best of both worlds, though, if you took the Wish List thread and split it apart again, something like as follows:

Gameplay
-Interface
-Rules
-Policy (different from rules)
-Universe Layout
-Media
--Sound and Music
--Graphics
--Dialog
Code (like code section rewrite requests or programming hints)
Technical Issues
PlaneShift Policy

Then, make a Sticky thread for each forum reserved for proposition of matured ideas.

Perhaps it won\'t completely fix the mess here (several people posting the same thing), but at least it will clean things up a lot...

(oh boy, lightning outside...gotta run!)

p.s., the first thing I\'d add to the technical thread is gamma correction.  the monitor I *was* using is not as bright as most.  while I\'ve never had trouble with brightness of other games, I could not see anything at night or in the caves...

also, of course, in-game mixer controls (not just volume control)

maybe a musical control panel (in pssetup) that lets you add your own .ogg files to the playlist without manually removing songs from the installation and inserting your own of the same name.  (of course, I love the music and wouldn\'t want to remove it.)  How \'bout if the music is set up with folders...\"cave music\" in one folder, \"tavern music\" in another, etc., so that it can shuffle/cycle among songs.  you could even use multiple songs that have corresponding lead in and out so that you could have constant, seamless, and not-repetitive music...

Did I miss something...? This doesn\'t seem to have anything to do with the topic of this thread... lol. Save me if I\'m making a fool of myself here.  :P

ah, true.  you\'re totally right...  just jumping the gun...

Nicola Tesla wrote a paper to a group of scientists in which he said something to the effect of, \"We can create a wireless communication system using polyphasic radio signals,\" and he asked each of them to invent a particular part to be used in the radio.  A year later, he wrote another letter to the effect of, \"Since nobody invented what I needed, I did it all myself.  It works, and here\'s how you build it.\"

(I\'ll bet you thought Marconi invented the radio. :P)

The few good ideas that come up here, are easy to find... and the \"Wish list\" forum isn\'t hard to find your way around in... IMO it would be wasted to split up the forum, since there are not that many posts.

besides, they already have someplace else to post ideas, it\'s discussed in the important: official feature requests thread at the top of the forum...

yeah, I know.  I referred to it in my first post on this thread.  I think it would save more than a negligible amount of time and result in a bigger pool of ideas.  I have seen the same idea brought up multiple times.  Plus, I feel shy about posting ideas I may have, because I don\'t know if anyone else has posted it.  I\'d have a lot of reading to do to find them.

No big deal if it\'s too late to make a change like that, tho.  I\'ll just grit and bear it.

all you have to do is type in some keywords in the search engine dealing with your idea, then sift through some of the threads to see if any of them match your topic

oh, and while some of the people here will get aggravated if you bring up an old topic, vengeance has already said he doesn\'t mind an idea being revisited, because it can sometimes bring a fresh perspective.

well, hope that was helpful, seeya

In reply to the original topic, it is important to have some kind of structure to organise the ideas that are posted in this forum, but due to the relatively small amount of posts this section receives, I believe that splitting it up would be more hassle than it\'s worth.

The idea would of course be ideal in a time when Planeshift has a massive playerbase (I\'m sure it will one day soon ;)) with many suggestions being brought up here. However... right now it would mean that the current few posts will be seperated into all those categories, meaning that instead of just coming straight here and viewing one page of all the ideas, we\'ll have to load at all the different forum sections, one at a time, just to look at a few posts.

Phew... I had a hard time describing that. Hope it makes enough sense. :)

I understand, and I\'d normally agree with you tygerwilde ?_?, but most ppl don\'t think far enough ahead to click search.  (those idiots!  oh wait, I didn\'t search for gamma correction...)

Mogura, plenty concise.  I like the idea of bringing up old threads, but right now there are 23 pages worth in Wish list!  ?_?

oh, I\'m so happy to have my ascii faces back!  ?_?  now I will barrage everyone with them, mwa ha ha ?_?

:-?
:-?

oops, gotta stay on topic..  oh yeah, I need to suggest standard input in the chat window, so I can use ascii faces and so that CJK chars will work...

um, true, but is it about the same amount of work as searching anyway?  (looking up gamma correction, I\'d have to look up \"gamma\", \"bright\", \"dark\", \"light\", etc.  looking up standard input, I have no clue what I\'d look for.  looking up \"gamma\", I got 6 matches, 5 of which had to do with brightness)  besides, people monitoring threads can turn on email notification.

Are you seriously proposing splitting wish list into 12 little forums?

I don\'t see that happening.
