Magic?
« on: July 10, 2003, 10:24:02 pm »
I assume there will be magic in the finished game, and I was just thinking it would be cool if instead of a list of spells or buying a spell-in-a-bag, if there were, say, ten magic words in the game. To use a spell, you would say a specific combination of these words, like you type (or click on in sequence) \"abra-cadabra-alakazam\" to do a spell for example. It would add an element of discovery and exploration to the game, because everyone would have to experiment with combinations of words. Once you doiscovered a spell it would be memorised and you could look it up in a personal notebook or whatever.

By the way, wouod the game us mp or what?

nobody has answered yet, but it could be great ....

I\'d see it just slightly different...players would buy a spell book; in these spell books they would write what they learn o=while exporing; there, they could mix sentences, and by mixing a fire sentence with another one ...let\'s say it\'ll make a big speel ; and so on

As the status display ingame shows both HP and MP values, I would assume that magic will indeed consume MP.

I don\'t think that would be very fun... When you\'ve played the game with a couple of mages, and start over again, then you can just type in all the magic words from the start and voila, instant ?bermage with all spells.. There would have to be made a lot of restrictions to that system, and such would take a longer time than to just make a lot of spells that could be learned by reading a book, which IMO would be simpler and better...

I think it would be cool to have \"tool\" spells.  You know, like Water walking, and breathing under water, and a levitation spell of some kind, maybe one to lock/unlock doors, one to view the contents of other player\'s inventory, perhaps one that allows you to manipulate objects and open doors from a distance.  You know what I\'m gettign at.  It would add another nice element to the game, and wizards would be good for more than just flashy combat ability.

Somebody\'s been playing alot of Morrowind lately, havn\'t they? ;)

Hehe, I agree with you totally Hayden. This would also encourage people to party up with mages, who could give the group the ability to cross that dangerous ravine or fast-flowing river, reaching places a warrior by himself could only ever dream of...

See, Moogie get\'s it!  Sure, I\'ve been playing too much Morrowind, but the game makes excellent use of such spells!  They help to add to the flavor, and make mages so much more versatile!

I like that idea since I plan on being a mage myself.
Hmmm... weather spells, with cable you could shout rain-rain-weather words in order like juna-juna-macdee, and make everyone lag out, thus winning the battle :P
(Yes I know my example sucks).

Yeah that sounds like a real fine way to put an Explorer out of business :P .

Just sticking this onto a mage doesn\'t do any good, you still just have a 3 character type party system of mages, warriors, and healers except mages are now doubly valuable.  However this does bring up an excellent oppurtunity to add a new type of part member; a guide!  A guide would be the only person would could use the majority of this area affect type magic, and it is the only magic they could use as well.  As such it wouldn\'t really be a mage character, as they would have to use weapons to fight.  Most of the spells would have to be more low-level as well, so you don\'t necessarily have to be a mage-inclined race to use them.  However they wouldn\'t be a warrior either, as they would have to take some combat penalties for having the magic type.  If the parties run off of shared experience though, they could still gain levels without having to do a lot of combat.  Oh yes, this sounds sooooooo cool now; and probably way too ambitious, but really cool nevertheless.
Ninjas have feelings too.  Mostly they feel like dancing.

Here\'s a thought... why not put the spells into different \"schools\", so that a person couldn\'t just pick this school of alteration spells; They\'d have to limit themselves.  And say I was to create an explorer charachter, but wanted to have combat and armor skills as well as magic; I would take lock picking, an armor and a weapon; then I\'d find myself faced with the problem of what magic area to pick.  One that would allow me to levitate?  One that would let me breathe under water?  These types of choices would initially limit the abilities of the user, but eventually, they would be able to use all of them.  Instead of being competition for an exlorer, they would serve to assisst them.

Yes, there are six (6) different ways or schools if you will of magic. These are the following: Crystal Way, Azure Way, Blue Way, Red Way, Brown Way and Dark Way.

\'\'No one can master all Arcane Lore Ways, a good mix is made of two Ways.\'\'

Yes the current system will compose of multiple types of spells which i imagine shall be cobinable, from what i can gather it seems to be something like;

red - fire
blue - water
brown - earth
crystal - holy
azure - air
dark - black

The first quote i posted seems to suggest that spells learnt will stay learnt and so spells will work on a progression system similar to that of grandia (not on experience but on spell types I mean)

Well, see, there ya go!  Stick the water walking/breathing spells under blue, the levitation spell under azure, etc.  I think it would be very workable.
