Try to look at local computer-magazines, one of them should have a test somewhere. But, since Im a Radeon fan, I recommend you to get a Radeon 9600/9700 pro. They are, rather, cheap, and very good.

Cal\'s right, Radeon has better graphic processors at better prices than GeForce.. So I would also recommend a Radeon...

I\'m tired of ATi, too.  they don\'t seem to last me long, and installing drivers can be a nightmare.  one thing I must say *for* ATi is that they are open about the operation of their processors, making it easier for Linux systems to use \'em.

I just ordered a GF4MX440SE DDR for $39, which is about the going rate.  I haven\'t tried the FX chips, but the GF4MX440s are just such a good darn price now...

of course, the flipside about the nVidia cards is that the Linux, Unix, and FreeBSD drivers are closed...held by nVidia, so it isn\'t build into the Linux kernel.  the driver\'s not all that hard to install, but lots of problems could be solved by letting Linus Torvalds\' henchmen get his hands on the source code...  ;-)

both ATi and nVidia cards are good.  ATi has never intended to be high performance chips but good chips truly worth getting, like the video input/output, DVD decoders (a while ago), etc.  nVidia has always tried to be the highest speed chips.  ATi has really surprised a lot of people by edging over nVidia in performance lately.  I still recommend nVidia cards for gaming, unless you\'re interested in wasting money to get a high speed card...

(I\'m not really an nVidia or ATi guy.  I have 3 nVidia cards and 3 ATi cards.  I like \'em both.  I started out as a big ATi and anti-nVidia guy, and now I\'m about 50%/50%.)

umm, I can find all sorts of Tom\'s VGA Charts with Radeon 9700 Pro, but I can\'t find any of the GeForce FX chips in the charts.   anyone know where I can find that?

Radeon 9700 here ....

Bought it and never complained ... except for fishing out approx. $360 ( 115 K.D.) ..

Needless to say the best card out there .. nVidia you have no chance ....
Even the latest cards by nvidia failed to beat the 9700 ...

Buy it and you\'ll never be sorry ...

Kluger .. I just wanted to point out to you that the price might be right with the mx440 but I prefer quality over the price... I want something that will last a bit more than 2 months with me

Serious gamer >> radeon 9700 (not 9800)
economy gamer >> any mx440 will do ...

Geforce mx 440 is a crappy card, doesn\'t support directx 8.. so no pixelshading... and if there\'s no pixelshading it isn\'t worth 1 cent :P

I think so too, I wonder if it will use the 256 megs of RAM better than the Radeon 9800pro... I mean, those 256 megs changed the framerate by 1,7 (or so) on standard graphics setup in UT2003.. and that isn\'t worth paying extremely high prices for... IMHO...

yeah, ATI is definitely selling the fastest chips.  nVidia has always been in the lead for fast chips, but now they\'re hitting the value market, so playing catch-up isn\'t a big issue for them.

the GF4MX440 doesn\'t support DX8?  I never heard anything like that.  3DMark2001 seems to like it okay, and it doesn\'t seems to be missing any support...  (for me, of course, I don\'t care \'bout DX8.  I\'m a Linux users... ^_^)

of course, the GF4MX440 is about 2/5 the speed of the 9700pro, but the price difference is greater than 2/5.  as a general rule, I always recommend to my customers to get whatever is the best bang for the buck to maximize the length of time between upgrades and save money for the next upgrade.  I\'m getting the GF4MX440, and it\'ll give me around 130 frames per second in UT2003.  considering that\'s faster than my monitor can even refresh, I don\'t think I\'ll be upgrading for a while.  :-?  \'course I\'m not a gamer at all.  I don\'t even \"play\" Planeshift, I just come to test and chat.  (originally, I installed it \'cause I wanted to find some good games for packaging with Linux computers...)  Rogue, have you made a purchase?  if so, I\'m interested in what you got and what you think.

Well its a good advice Kluger ...

Well for your case a mx440 is great for linux ... And btw. It does support dx v.8 .. (I have a 32mb card that has it ...) so I\'m not only sure I\'m certain that it supports dx 8.0  ...

But for me I LOVE Games .. Infact I\'m addicted to games and thats why I love to program .... werid but true .. The only reason I learn all these languages and learn how to use them is to help me with my game programming ...

So when you tell me that mx440 has a better value than 9700 and your also telling me that I WON\'T be able to play HALF LIFE 2 on it .. I\'ll just buy the one I can play HL2 on ....
