Sorry for being stoopid and asking, but what\'s HL2? I\'m not as much of a games boffin as you lot, clearly.

Edit: Never mind just found out - wait! Half-Life 2! Wowee!

Although I think that HL2 will be a huge hit and come with many mods (possibly Counter-Strike 2, Team Fortress 2, and many user created levels), this will not affect PS.

Maybe some players will leave for awhile to play HL2, I\'m sure they will come back. Besides, there is no problem with playing some HL2 and then Planeshift in the same day (Unless you don\'t have a lot of free time like me  :(  ).

the wierd part that i see in PS comparing to other games is that it always gets compared to games that aren\'t in its genre, and that are (said to be) top-notch. i\'d take that as a compliment if i was a dev. :]

but really, let\'s stop comparing a free open-sourced constantly-evolving MMORPG to a (mostly single-player) commercial propertery shoot-em-up, ok? ...there\'s no point really

p.s. doom still lives on and is decades old now :P ...not to mention different MUDs, nethack, tetris-clones etc. etc.

That is possible - but the most important part of Planeshift is that it is and WILL BE a free RPG.  This makes it completely different from HL2. drawing a different kind of gamer (for the most part).  I don\'t think HL2 is a very good example of \'competition\' for PS for these reasons.

PS is
- MMORPG, with a lot of other (usually) cool people
- evolving all the time (like Linux  ;) ).

HL2 is
- FPS, single player => really a great game by the look of it, short life
- MP (DM, CTF, whatever) => good to wash away the stress, especially after one of those days at work. Don\'t play at this too long though, it\'s not healthy  :D
- (I know, the mods ... but it\'s about MP - yeah evolving too  8) )

So to me, those 2 just don\'t compare. It\'s like a long summer and an occasional rain (ouch this is sooo bad, please delete that ! ).
(don\'t take me wrong, as soon as HL2 is there, I will rush to the store ! And one week later, it will be a good game to remember about)

And the others xyRPGs, well, once you have settled at one place, it takes a lot to make you move - one day has so many hours, not more. Unless it\'s really worth it, but I can\'t see a good reason among the other xyRPGs out there.

Errrr, what was the question already ? Ah yes : with no particular order of preference,

- RP, guilds, ...
- people
- under perpetual developpment and improvement by a very good and dedicated team
- 3D 1st/3rd world, very nice graphics
- rooftops (did I say that ? really ? must be a glitch)
- the quests. Why, it\'s a refreshing experience
- did I say free ? Oh I would be ready to pay a fee for this (a few rubies every month or so)

and probably a ton of other reasons. But I must go ...

What I just thought could be dangerous is this.
Since PS is open source, it\'s not stopping anybody from taking the code, changing models, design, story, and creating totaly different game and following up to every update that PS does.
And once PS becomes really hi-tech game, people could easily make a similar game based on the work of the devs of PS.  This could create 20 more of games like PS, some may even start charging.

Or maybe I\'m missing some brain cells :D

PS Evolving
« Reply #67 on: July 24, 2003, 08:01:30 am »
Well here are my thoughts on this subject...... Asuming that the engine for PS is also Open source, there should be no reason for it to stop evloving...... So with that being said PS has the potential to grow and evolve as long as the team and players continue to support the project.  I hope that I may also get involved after my education.  By then most of the bugs will be fixed.........

Ok, you have to understand that...
Quote
characters and storylines and quests blah blah...
IS what makes the game. :P with out the caracters you would be nobody in the game, no NPC\'s, no Monsters(etc...), without story lines there would be no point, and without quest there wouldn\'t much to do....

I know most of you if not all have heard of the MMORPG called Everquest  and have probably seen the screenshots for the upcoming EQ2.

I\'d say Planeshift is on its way to being at least  as graphically pleasing as the current EQ and thats far more than enough for me!
As Planeshift is being offered free of any charge, one might assume that it will attract many people who cannot afford a subscription game the likes of EQ (aside from those who refuse to pay ;)  ).  I would think these people would appreciate graphics that don\'t take a completley tricked out uber-computer to run, I certainly would!

But as for where the graphics are now take a look at where EQ was to begin with=>

Everquest \"Proof of Concept\"

Instructions:
  • Set your desktop to 256 colors. It won\'t run in anything higher.
  • Double click\"everquest.exe\"
  • Login is: solo
  • Leave the password field blank.
  • The client will start in a window. Hit \"F2\" to go to full-screen mode.
  • To exit the client, hit your Escape key.
  • If you cannot run in Windows XP click on \"Everquest.exe\" choose properties and select Win 98/ME and Run in 256 colors from compatibility menu.
[/COLOR]

Looks to me like Planeshift will do more than fine  :]

Fiere thanks for that input it really tickled my laughing-muscle  :D . Excellent point. The keywords are:
  • FREE
  • Open-sourced
  • Constantly-evolving world
  • Constantly-evolving storylines
  • Player involvement in developing ideas
  • 3D online permanent fantasy world

Free , isn\'t that what the web was all about before it got dot.commed! Let that spirit live, that\'s what brought me here in the first place to check PS out!

Open sourced , thank God someone eventually had the vision to do for PC (online) gaming what Linux had done for OS\'s - gave everybody the CHOICE whether they want to make someone else rich or join a co-operative community of \"do-it-yourself\'ers\". This must rate right up there with the abolishment of slavery and the promised ascenscion to heaven!  :P

Constantly-evolving world , now THIS is why I stayed on after my first visit. This promises to be as real as reality but with the added built in advantage that you can go off-line if life gives you Hell  8) .

Constantly-evolving storylines , talk about dynamism. I hate HL etc. etc., it gets plain boring after 3 days. Can have just as much fun doing the same thing over and over in front of a one-arm-bandit in a casino!

Player involvement in developing ideas . Now I had already been convinced to stick around, but when I realized to what extend one can (and is encouraged to) participate in the actual development of the concept, \"spirit\" and growth of the PS project ... Well let\'s just say I\'ve finished pouring the foundations!

3D online permanent fantasy world . Now this one sells itself. Let\'s just say I\'ve found me a home.

As for others copy-catting the open source elements. No copy-right is worth the paper it is written on. In fact the more you try and protect it the greater the will of others to copy, crack etc. Being the first, staying on top through constant involvement and continous development ... Somehow I don\'t tremble with fear at the prospect of PS being caught or overrun by copycats!

So in my humble, subjective and utterly correct opinion PS is wonderful, the best and heading for greatness!

First of all people keep saying quests and graphics - based on what there is now I would not still be here, lol I\'m afraid I\'m contented to keep my one crystal and not crystal hunt!  The reason I want to stick around is Wolfmane\'s option number 5 -> developing quests and putting my own mark on this game!

Sashok did bring up a good point though - people could easily copy our ideas and create competition for the original - but any copying of such ideas would inevitably lead back to the original would spread THIS planeshift\'s popularity... this is a complex business theorum... but lets just say many companies are beggining to see the light in copy-lefting their products just to spread them like a scourge upon the market!  Look at 2-buck-chuck every wine conoseurs\' worst nightmare but a businessman\'s dream... and look at Wizards of the coast... they have realized that they make the most money off the D&D rulebooks - so they are copylefting their D&D ruleset so that games and movies and boooks,... etc etc will spread their popularity... in essence the free-product movement is nothing more than market-flooding and subsequent popularity-gains

Great concept I love it!

Just as long as its not quantity over quality, it will be great. Popularity will help bring in fresh ideas and renew efforts, but as long as it is focused on developing Planeshift and not countless offshoots thereof.

Man you have a habit of making my day!  :D In the spirit of this below-the-belt reply (at least as perceived by my dirty mind, though I would have thought you had 2 of \'em)  consider this little joke:

What does the hurricane say to the Palmtree?
\"Hold onto your nuts .... this is not going to be any ordinary bl*w-job

*ahem duck\'s as rotten eggs, half-empty beer bottles and  less than fresh tomatoes rain on him from the audience*  8)

Amen, I agree fully kbilik. Spare us all the mod\'s and offshoots. I vote for lobbying for: \"PS, only PS and nothing but PS so .......\"  :P :D
