'Wagoneer' Character
« on: July 17, 2003, 08:46:49 pm »
A variety of methods have been discussed for travelling from one town to another.  Since not everyone is going to want to specialize in riding creatures, there is a niche in the player run economy for a profession that allows someone to make and ride vehicles (simple things of course such as wagons, carts, and eventually boats for the lower levels)... with some skill in tame creature the \'wagoneer\' could possibly hook various creatures (to limit the number of creatures it should be said that only the strongest creatures can pull big carts) to his cart.  Maybe special abilities can be gained from the creature - such as dragons would allow the vehicles to fly.  This character could gain skills by transporting people or goods from one town to another.

Oh yeah - the most important function of these vehicles is that they are A: driven by a skilled wagoneer B: able to carry a number of other people depending on the size of the vehicle and C: able to carry items and resources, also dependant on the size of the vehicle.

Yeah ! some sort of trains, it would be cheaper than riding a huge creature, indeed.

Nice idea in concept... but who would really want to do that, unless it\'s just a side job...

Thats why the vehicles are capable of carrying cargo as well as passengers - The \'wagoneer\' player also has the option to do trade runs - buying items in one city and selling them in another... Therefore a negotiation skill of some type would also be helpful for buying low and selling high

I would prefer NPCs to do these jobs. Cause always doing the same \"run\" would become very boring for players.

you wouldnt havre to do the same run... there will be multiple cities and levels.... besides... noone complains about warriors because they have to go out and do monster runs - try a trader in a game it\'s surprisingly fun (especially if you are the greedy money loving sort)

good idea, it could also be implemented that whenever u sell an item at the new town, the store will then start selling that item, that way u can also ask or pay the wagoneer to go get you certain things so u can buy them at the town ur in (would have to be limited supply of course)

I still don\'t think anyone would want to this full-time, you gotta get out some ya\' know.  But if it were a part-time job that would be great.

I really like the buy-low-sell-high idea, but I agree that an npc should work the people transporting carts. A fee could be paid to him for the pleasure. This also creates another niche in the market, as players could make their own vehicles to compete with npcs; offer faster journeys, cheaper prices or trips to special regions where rare items and monsters could be found (although I think that you should only be able to get so close to one of these areas in a vehicle, to make exploring more challenging).

So everyone\'s happy; people don\'t have to rely on a player always being there because there will be npcs, and Drilixer still gets to be a trucker when he grows up.

well no one is going to do their job FULL time. every one will get away for a while to explore and do quests.

But just think of it as playing a primitive stock market. :)
