OK was wanting to put this idea out there for discussion
« on: July 18, 2003, 09:49:36 pm »
This game is free and will always be free which is great. However I was wondering just how exactly this was going to be accomplished.

Right now a server is being donated and it works because thousands upon thousands of players aren\'t signing on to play. Eventually however the hardware requirements to run a game server could become more than donation practices could handle.

So how does an open source game make the money necessary to run?  I had a few ideas that I wanted to put out there and see what everyone thought:

The foundation of my thought is some sort of partnership with a publishing house of some sort. The publisher funds the hardware costs in return for exclusive rights to publish outside game content. For instance the Planeshift pen and paper RPG, Planeshift Novels, comic books. you get the idea. I am not sure how this fits in with the license you are using for the content of the game but thought I would throw it out anyway.

60900+ people can be on the one server at once and it is rising, last month or so it was 55000  something

That number just reflects how many accounts are currently present in the database. It does not reflect the amount of people the server can handle at once.

The maximum number of clients online that the server can handle is unknown at present. That\'s what the server stress testing sessions are for.

I dont think merchandise is such a good idea... afterlall we dont want this to become like the game-that-shall-not-be-named where the devs stopped caring about the nonpaying players and from then on if you didnty pay it was like playing a demo...

Must admit I haven\'t been to a stress test:
\"bad wolf, bad ..!!\" X(

How are they going. Will try tomorrow at 22:00 CET.

Keeping things free and open source is great. That is what attracted me here in the first place. I hope we can keep PS that way.

Venge said that there are no more stress-tests. :/
Browsing the forums when I\'m bored, nothing more.
