Yliakum confusion...
« on: July 22, 2003, 09:44:23 pm »
Many people are confused as to what Yliakum is... I looked it up in the overview to make sure I had it straight... and I\'m afraid that now I have found the problem.

This quote is from the overview pasge on the planeshift website: \"Yliakum is an underground city. The inhabitants, a mixture of different races, also call it the \"City of the Azure Sun\", referring to the huge crystal that gives the city its light and supplies the land with life-giving energy. Yliakum is located thousands of meters under the surface inside a huge excavated stalactite, hanging inside a cave so huge that it could contain any kingdom of the surface. For this reason IT is structured in grades...\"

This quote, I believe is the source of the confusion... it refers to Yliakum as a city at the beggining and then by the end Yliakum is made out of layers... making it the entire inside of the stalagmite...  But then that idea is disputed in this quote from the History section: \"But Laanx and Talad were young and they didn\'t ask any other details on that as they were blinded by the possibility of creating a new world. Therefore, they used their powers to enlarge the niche and they obtained the huge cave made by eight levels.\"

Obviously the \'new world\' = \'the eight levels\' and therefore = Yliakum...

So I think the idea that Yliakum is a city is just where the Italien devs who made the site had some minor problems with translation... what they meant to say (I guess) is that Yliakum IS the world inside the stalagmite where the player races reside... although nothing says that it excludes the Stone Labyrinths.

-> looking at this from another angle though in which the word city was meant -> Yliakum might just be the capital of our stalagmite that hasnt been implemented yet :P

EDIT: Dev word on this issue would be appreciated - if this is a city a forum to discuss it would be nice like the \'Tree Castle\' Forum

After reading this post I\'ve become more confused than ever.. So what I gather is Yliakum is a huge stalagmite underground and is composed of layers? Must be a very big stalagmite..

So, if Yliakum is a stalagmite underground then could it also be said that there are other worlds? (Not that the team wants to even think of making more worlds for Planeshift)

Drilixer: In this topic, you said that my comment was off topic... I don\'t agree, but I will respect your request and reply here instead.

The person there said his city should be at least four times the size of Yliakum, but as we\'ve acertained on this thread that Yliakum is infact the world of PlaneShift, he is obviously mistaken in his geography. I didn\'t feel it was off-topic for the thread to mention that ever-so-slight fault in his otherwise nicely thought out city. :)

A city really is a huge place, I live in Sheffield in the UK and thinking logically about it theres no mmorpg world ive played thats even really as big as that.
So I suppose that it could very well be described as a city.
Hydlaa is no bigger than my old housing estate. :/

I was thinking.. maybe the stalagmite is not actually huge.. but in fact, the characters/cities/lands are super duper small! Yeah! I\'m gonna go get a stalagmitetite and see if there are little dwarves running around picking up crystals and diamonds that appear on the ground!!

Shinji if you find any mail me a couple!!  I would love a pet bite sized dwarfling to play with :)  Give him a little axe... some tiny tin foil armor... put him in a lego maze... and lock a rat in the other end... OH! I mean I\'ll love him and hug him and...

First off, there\'s no reason that \"Yliakum\" can\'t refer to both the entire world and a city within it.  Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, and the US states of New York and Oklahoma all have major cities of the same name, and the residents seem to deal with it just fine.  Of course, I don\'t know if this is really what the devs intend (the whole overview is sort of unclear), but it isn\'t unthinkable.  Would be nice to have some clarification from the admins.

Second, from the overview, \"...the stalactite belief is only theory devised by some Xacha scientists and has not been proven yet\".  (Near the bottom, under the \"Waste\" heading)  What to make of this?  Are the devs leaving themselves an out if they decide the stalactite idea is silly or if they need more room to expand the world later?  (Personally, I think the idea of an entirely underground world with levels and huge caverns is really, really cool, but the stalactite thing seems a little silly.  But that\'s really neither here nor there.)

Finally, Skain: in medieval terms, a large city was only a few tens of thousand people.  One assumes that all the players and visible NPCs make up only a fraction of the world\'s total population.  I would hope that in the final world, the major cities are considerably larger than Hydlaa, but they don\'t need to rival Tokyo to be realistic cities.

I still think calling a city and the stalagmite the same thing is just poor - but then again I\'m confused - where is this city we are talking about?
