Recreation?
« on: July 26, 2003, 01:06:17 am »
MMORPGs usually revolve around battling, and more recently weapon/armor smithing, and also shop keeping. However, when I play a MMORPG (or even regular RPGs for that matter) I tend to get tired of the same killing of monsters, weapon smithing, bartering.. and instead I just want to spend a little time doing something fun with friends. And in that, I ask for one (perhaps two) things that would be fun in PS but not essential. This could maybe take the form of a trading card game, animal raising(I don\'t like it, but maybe some do), fishing... just something that takes the tension off trying to get stronger, and just having a little bit of fun.

\"Animal raising\" ... sounds like \"Pokemoning\"  :D

Seriously, i agree with you, people should post their ideas on this thread so that we have some funny things to do ingame.

First of all one thing in game that I have to say I find highly disturbing: marriages and eating as long as those two primal sins of sane gaming are left out of Planeshift I\'ll be one happy monkey!

Now what would my character like to do in this game beyond adventuring and fighting... making money... pking oh scratch that one... OH! pickpocketing... nope not that one...

Ahha! racing those big flyong creature things that we\'ve been promised!  We better be able to race those things in an official atmosphere.  With NPC controlled races etc etc... that would be awesome (and make your monster training idea more feasible... ) can you imagine showing up at a local nOOb level race with your pet Silver Dragon? muahahaha

Hope you will become a very sad monkey then...

Some fun activities to do while you\'re not saving the world/doing your daily work.

*Playing cards.

*Watching duels at the arena.

*Bow-competitions.

*Bar-fights.

*Spar against your friends (skill involved)

*DM-activities (festivals, marriage, competitions etc.)

*Casinos and/or lotteries.

*Bet on lizards (like horse racing)

*shopping (souvenirs, clothes, books, addons to your house etc.)

*Restaurants where you can sit down and eat/drink.

*Library.

more to come...

you\'d think people don\'t like wading their Kran warrior through swarms of demons flailing their club right and left...  but uh ae you going to restrict some of theese activites because I just don\'t see some races (Krans in particular) out playing marbles...  Besides we don\'t want Planeshift to become a \'party game\' like those detestable Mario Console Party things

First I must say that not everyone share your view about those \"detestable\" as you call them, Mario Console Party things. I think the idea is great, for many reasons.
Heh, you\'re like an old man who cannot accept that there is other people with other opinions than himself.

Why do you care so much about people who marry each other?
Does that affect you? No! So why are you so agains it?

Hey, Marbles!  That was a good idea, Drilixer!  It would actually be amusing to see a few Krans doing that.  As for the marraige thing, how about we just RP that, and avoid giving it in game benefits?  And what\'s wrong with a few side games?  People get sick of fighting all the time, and a distraction is welcome on occasion.

I think they should put in a really fun mini-game that everyone will like, that wont offend anyone  :)) ! It won\'t ever be frustrating because it wouldn\'t matter in the bigger picture, but everyone will do it for fun while they\'re fed-up with levelling.

It will be easy to learn and fun no matter how long you do it. It will have enjoyable stuff along with the challenging and exciting parts  :D .

^^^^^^^
(Can\'t think of anything.)

hehe.. seriously though..

I wonder if some of the happier cities could have \'fairground\' complexes.

They could work much like they do in real life. Rides, but more importently lots of caravans with (arrow) shooting ranges, ball/hoop throwing, fishing, anything else. The prizes could get better and better limited only by your skill, but all the games would need a few trias to play.

Some people would get really good at them to the point where it\'s actually a legitimate way for them to get good items/wealth. Then we would have true-to-form arcade junkies in-game :D

*bashing face against wall* now that you\'ve posted a paragraph of your dream game while not describing a single aspect of it - why not just drop the idea of mini-games for the time being - they wont be implemented for at least a couple years anyways :P

I agree with Fanomatic2000 and shinji completely who wouldnt want to do some of these things like watching a great duel in the arena and cheering on your friend or sit down in a bar and eat this would provide good features for roleplayers. Im sure there will be fishing also. Buying souveniers and bar-fights will also be good for roleplaying afterall thats what more than half of the people will be roleplaying anyway. To me these arent minigames but cardgames and bow competitions are.

An example of how a card game could work is Arcomage from 3D0\'s Might & Magic Series. As for other mini-games they gave that ago in Might & Magic IX and it was disappointing although I bet it could be done better.

Oh they also did the dueling and watching duels side of it to which was quite good. You get charged a small amount to watch a duel but taking part is free.

To take part you select the level of your opponent (in PS you could fight NCP\'s or other players) and enter the arena where you would fight to the death then return and collect prize money on the level of the fight.

P.S. In game betting would be a good feature in PS
I have returned!!
