'Builder' Job
« on: July 26, 2003, 03:42:38 am »
Imagine this. Wouldn\'t it be funky if...

You\'re a successful traveling merchant. Your good friend who travels by your side just happens to be in the Builder profession. Travelling along the well-worn paths between towns, you oft come across perfect spots to set up shop and snag some customers from the steady supply of adventurers who use the same road.

Today you went and rented a horse and cart and bought a whole cartload of building materials. Using this, your friend gets to work sawing and hammering and constructing a small, simple building, while you unpack your stock onto a couple of fold-away tables. After a few hours of hard labour, you have your very own house, with room for your stock to be locked up safely at night while you sleep in the next room.

You stay here for several weeks. It seems you chose a great place! You make alot of profit, splitting it 50-50 with your ever-useful pal, before deciding to pack up once again and move somewhere else. The building is de-constructed, your stock packed away once again.

How cool would that be! :D

This is basically what I see Builders being useful for. Being able to build simple or grand structures anywhere, depending on his skill level and if he has enough to pay for a suitable plot of land (in wilderness areas I assume it would be free). They would also be able to construct seige weapons (battering rams, ballistas, catapults, etc) for castle/fortress raids.

Sorry if it\'s been posted before. I really havn\'t heard much about it since I arrived, so I assume it isn\'t exactly a hot topic. :)

Tha\'s a great idea Moogie!  Maybe wizards would be able to enchant materials so that creatures could not enter buildings created from the aforementioned materials... this way builders could have their wizard friend enchant their stuff and then they could set up a healing shop right outside a large well traversed dungeon... and imagine if you could charge people a door fee for you to let them into your monster free area... I really look forward to the builder class because it has the potential to set Planeshift apart from all the other MMORPGs (to the best of my knowledge).  If done right...  I truly hope that the programmers will be able to set this class up like in a real time strategy game where the [builder] chooses exactly where he wants the building on the ground spends the necessary \'buttload\' of resources and time and then presto he gets his building exactly where he wants it.  There needs to be a lartge number of preset houses and stands possible to build.  But there would also be custom buildings that could be ordered (out of game)through a dev and then placed in a grand architectural library somewhere for master builders to \'come across\' and then build whatever unique structure they want... *phew* I love trade classes - except farming... who would want to plow dirt in a game...

I think this would put the game over the mark of other mmorpgs

of course you would have to buy the land. (have land seperated in to squares)  could buy from other players, or the ncp court house or somthing.

the wildy would be free, so u can claim it. but if you dont occupy the land with any buildings, then in 4 days it should become unclaimed again. and you can only claim so much land in so little time.

my 2 cents.

oh, and building somthing should take an increadable long time. to prevent 1000 ft structures being built in a hour.

God bless,

I think making building\'s destroyable would solve all your crowding needs... thats how they explain the lack of NPCs in the city :)

To me there should be a weekly fee based on the size of the house and the location and there should be certain areas were you cant build this way there wont be alot of user made houses to croud up the area. Also if there are any user made taverns travellers should be able to rent a room upstairs and check out when they are ready to leave this way the tavern owners will mkae alot of profit to buy food from chefs and alchohol from brewers.

great idea shangralah - wizards should be able to summon golems to work businesses for people -> a builder could build a smithy for a player who is a good blacksmith.  The smith could then get a wizard to hire a golem to watch over the shop - not to defend the shop but to sell the smith\'s wares to anyone who comes in... this way the smith can keep doing his mining and smithing without having to worry about clogging the shout channels hawking his wares.

Perhaps we could even have a npc controlled guild, where builders could join. This guild would help the builders to get a good wage, and, would also bring the players closer to each other.
Hmm... that guild remind me of something in real life..

Here\'s a thought; why not have buildings get constructed faster with more builders.  A single builder gets started on a house, it\'ll take, say a week, 14 builders get started on a house, they\'ll finish it in half a day.

a week would be annoying - would you expect the player to stay on the entire week and just leave their computer and the client running while the house is being built?

Great ideas everyone! I especially liked Shang\'s ideas. It seems the Builder is essential for a very wide range of character classes and professions... I really hope we get to see these features in the game some day!

Wizards summon creatures, after awhile, they disappear. Animal trainers charm and train animals, making them pets. Pets won\'t disappear, unless they are killed, or set free.
