An idea for servers.
« on: August 13, 2003, 01:15:56 am »
I don\'t know how good of a server you are hosting the game on right now... but it begs the question of if it will be able to handle over 100 players at a time. If it cant i think i have an idea.

Other people can host servers, they have to be credible... like devs or something... The kicker is, that every 24 hours each server would update stats to another server, that would host the MySQL program. This way you can log on to any server, so if one is having lag issues or too many people are on you can go to a different server and still play your same character...

There would of course be problems. Because if you loose items on one server because you die or something. you can then log on to another server and you wont have any items lost until the update.

Something would have to be worked out, but i think its a good idea to have once the game gets near complete and has a few hundred players on at a time...  or maybe you have a good enough server?

or you log on to one server through ip and it acts as an extra processor or some such but all the people are on the same server ina  such.

I dont think that would work. The only thing i could see is, you would automatically host a zone when you log on... but that might suck, cause if you have someone with a 56k modem... he can have a 3.1ghz processor with 1gb ram and it wont make a difference... that zone he hosts will be real laggy for anyone to be in. It sounds like it would be good, but im just not sure it could work out. I think my idea is a bit more stable and it wouldn\'t allow for much hacking, because if you host your own zone... there would be ways to hack..... maybe

i didn\'t say host your own zone. you take a server and connect it to the mane server directly.  then you have twice as much power and can hold ore people.

hmm... it sounds good... i guess... it is kind of my idea, with less of a hassle of uploading the MySQL data.

hehe and where are these mystery servers going to come from?  No, the devs requested possible servers before and they came up with Fragnetics - that should be sufficient for a long time.

i meant multiple location liek fragnetics and it connects you to the lowest ping server.  when this game gets more players you get more people with servers to donate.

Yikes! Whatever happening to doing a little researching before offering a suggestion? Not only did the devs say they didn\'t want to have muliple servers splitting up the game, they also said the current server has barely any load even when the most people have been on- ok, so thats maybe only40 people, and there aren\'t all sorts of AIs burning up resourses yet, but I am pretty sure this server will suffice for quite some time.

Wow, what wonderful sugeestions! Now then know exactly how to solve all of their hosting woes! :P

It\'ll suffice until Crystal Blue... then I\'m guessing servers are going to be blown to bits and no one will be able to play the game at all.  Even if all that were added was mindless combat I\'m betting that would draw waaaaaaay more people into the game than are in it now, certainly more than a server designed for hosting First Person Shooters can handle.  Given, that is at least a few months away, but there does need to be a plan for a new server set-up with the new release, so I wouldn\'t say ideas are bad even if they aren\'t for now...

While I wouldn\'t disagree with the point that PlaneShift will definitely need more servers eventually, I\'m quite confident that we will be able to handle the load thrown at it for quite a while. Our CPU usage here barely ever crosses the 50% mark (it\'s usually 10-20%) after we shifted all our other game server hosting services off to another server.

IMO the main consideration would be that ping timings may be a more important factor in the future and there would probably be an opening for a second server hosted at another location, probably by another sponsor since we don\'t have servers outside of our country for now.

Nonetheless the community here is pretty small although we have more than 70,000 accounts (no idea how many of these are linkdead *grin*). I think the idea of a distributed network has been discussed before but I can remember that the solution was to have a handful of servers located around the world instead of having every other person host a zone.

I can\'t imagine how the load could exceed that of an FPS server until we get at least several hundred players online at the same time.

yea, it wont exceed FPS until you have over 50, basically i havent played a FPS that allowed more then 50 to a game, i think i heard SOF2 allows you to have up to 40, i may be wrong... Once you have like 75 though, and they are all in different zones, and they are all either killing something, or combining something, or running around in circles... i would imagine the CPU usage would be a bit higher
