General Ranting

Right then I\'ve noticed a slightly annoying trend going off since I started on these boards and that is the amount of stuff people are nicking out of Terry Pratchetts Discworld Novels, I\'ve seen everything from suggestions of dwarvish axes that come straight out of the books to people with stupidly long names just so they can be named after a character from the books. Now Ive got nothing against the books, in fact I love the books I\'ve got the whole series and have read them several times but cant people have a little imagination or if not at least credit where the ideas came from?

In case anybody is wondering my name is a rip off of a character from Tad Williams\' \"Memory, Sorrow and Thorn\" series of books but at least I\'ll admit to it?

Rant over
 :D
I have returned!!

Hehe, I\'ll give it an 7.6
:)

It\'s just natural that people\'s \"imagination\" comes from what they know. almost the whole heroic fantasy thing comes from LOTR, and tolkien took many elements from Icelandic (I think) legends.
sometimes someone comes up with a truly original idea, but that\'s very rare I think, so I don\'t mind if ideas are unoriginal as long as they\'re good.

btw I\'ve never read Terry Pratchett\'s books, might do it someday...
sig removed, it was kinda big ^^

actually it was more the norse mythology tolkien used as a basis, and the nordic tongue was used for many names such as \"gandalf\" which means \"wizard\" in english or \"trollkarl\" in nordic.. but Iceland is the only place where the old nordic tongue is still spoken.

this is the original skian (not kwartz) (for those who dont know kwartz is my bro long story but he took my name coz i stopped playin and its been him ur speakin too for past few months)

anyway ya.....
BjornStronginthearm (who u are obviously referin to) was me and ive never denied that i ripped it off, in fact i oppenly claimed it! Besides im Bradiel as of a few days ago, leadin the newly formed quest seekers, and whenever i said anything remotely discworld related about 90% of the ppl who heard had absolutely no idea what i was on about, The whole thing was a laugh nothing serious.
And thinking about it apart from me i dont think ive seen any other discworld related people, apart from krans with variants of the name detritus. But i havent been playin a lot recently and i havent read many discworld books.

He also used elements from German folk tales and Celtic Mythology. In fact he drew a lot from most of the prevalent mythologies of his time. Norse Mythology contributed a great deal of the Dwarven lore. Just as the Numenorean history is greatly influenced by the legend of Atlantis. The Elves of course are largely derived from The Celtic Lore regarding Faeri (not \"fairy\" but Faeri which are a totally different creature altogether).

What Tolkein did was take all these elements and make them his own. And that should be Planeshifts Goal as well. Its ok to borrow ideas from other mythologies as well as making up something totally new. Just remember that the borrowed idea must become a part of Planeshift not just another feature added because we like that mythological construct. If it doesn\'t fit or can\'t be refashioned to fit, and fit like it belongs, in Planeshift then it doesn\'t deserve our consideration.

Like Vengeance is always saying \"That\'s a good idea, But its not Planeshift.\"
