Questions about
« on: August 20, 2003, 09:16:21 pm »
Hello all,

This game rocks!. I have spent about two hours reading the faq and the forums and still have some questions. Ok, nearly sure the answer is somewhere in the forums but i have to go to work in a few minutes so be fine with me.

Most of this questions are made with neverwinter nights on mind

Will the server program be released to anyone for free?

Will there be something like a Dungeon Master client?

Will there be a toolset to build worlds?

Will there be the possibility to connect to a ODBC database for world persistence?

Will the game be programmed so that \"modpaks\" will be
easy to implement?

You seem to be coming at this from the technology side, so I would recomend you check out the sourceforge website, they have more of that kind of info. But suffice to say, the admins have stated they want to have one wourld under their control, so some of the software will never be released... but  iknow its not too hard to set up your own server.
world persistence? What, are you planning to turn off servers of something? :P

Akhran, this is a mmpog. so that means everyone is in the same game. u cant build ur own worlds, and you wont be able to add modpaks onto the game. unless ur just changing character models or something, but no one else will be able to see ur model.

all infomation will be stored on the sever so i dont know what ur meaning by connecting to a database. this is not a single player game. none of ur characters infomation will be stored on ur computer i believe (at least they will if they dont want people cheating)

ok, this is a mmorpg

I was thinking in the nwn model where you have:

a standalone server
a player client
a dm client
a world builder tool

there are hundreds of server (each one with a max of a hundred players), you can run your own server and run the world you have built with the world builder tool, and you can dm your world for your friends. In this model, the database has sense because some of the servers are not 24h/7 and because world buiding is not catched on the fly, and you have to restart the server.

ALthough very far from this model, planeshift seems to be a very very cool game!.

By the way, do you know a totally open source proyect of nwn-nature?

Will the server program be released to anyone for free?

If you take a look at the downloads page, you\'ll see a CVS thing, which includes the server (I think, but it\'s better you ask the devs tho. I\'m not really familiar with the Linux version.)

Will there be a toolset to build worlds?

Crystal-Space. But you can only build your own worlds if you use your own server, graphics, NPCs, quests and weapons, cause they\'re copyrighted.

Will there be the possibility to connect to a ODBC database for world persistence?

Suppose only if you run an official server. Dunno tho. Ask a dev.

Will the game be programmed so that \"modpaks\" will be
easy to implement?

There will probably be no \"modpaks\" from players on the official. You can \"modpak\" your own server as much as you want tho.
