Planeshift Etiquette?
« on: August 27, 2003, 12:08:21 am »
Hi,

yesterday I logged onto the Planeshift server to take a first look at it. First impression was a discussion about \'n00bs\' I thought I\'ve left behind in the DAoC (spell: s u b s t a n d a r d) social interaction.

So tell me: is it normal to insult unknown players as \'n00bs\' (which is an insult in my opinion)? Not that I was insulted but some other guy. If this is the normal player interaction, Planeshift will be like a freeware platform for all those ridiculous DAoC-Kids unable to interact in a human manor...

I haven\'t noticed that, most of the players I met when I was new were happy to help with my childish queries.

I don\'t think what you saw was a very accurate portrayal of Planeshift behaviour.  Most of the players are all too happy to help newbies learn what they can and can\'t do at the moment.  This is not all that common of an occurrence.   :)

Err, sorry about that, it was probably me...

I\'m normally quite helpful with newbs (but the \"n00b\" is another thing entirely), I don\'t remember the nature of the disscussion, but it was something exceedingly annoying, I\'m sure.

You have nothing to worry about, Schwatzkeen, if you act respectfully, you\'ll get respect in return, at least with all the regulars that I know.  I\'m extremely sorry if I discouraged you from playing PS in anyway.

Sorry again,
Grakrim

What\'s the difference between a newb and a n00b? Is one rarer or only found in inner cities or something?

n00b is ruder.  No one wants to be a n00b, but I dont think they mind being a newb.  Anyway, I usually say newbie.  ;(

I still don\'t understand the difference. He made it sound like they were different levels of newness.

When I say n00b, I mean it as an insult, its as simple as that.  I consider a n00b to be a new player that\'s disruptive to play.  I\'ve seen several examples of n00bs, which some of you regulars may remember.  For example, a number of weeks back (or months even), I remember one such case where one a n00b shouted some thing (I don\'t remember what precisely) repeatly for a good 15 minutes... Acraig eventually came in and took action; this was a serious case, but a good example of the behavior I consider n00bish.

When I say newb, I mean no insult, and I have yet to find a person (in my over 10 years of online game playing experience) to take offense to that particular term.

ROFL - yeah - anytimes you thrown in numbers and symbols in the place of leters or add in \'jooo\' to words at random... you are acting the part of an elitist-nOOb flamer

n00b eh?  that has always bothered me, there are plenty of disruptive older players, I don\'t see why new ones deserve to be called anything else.

so, as a result, I call everyone newbies

now go away, newbies...see? it works
