PS worked OK. Now it doesn't.
« on: September 03, 2003, 01:42:02 am »
What I have to deal with:

Windows XP
56kbps (dialup)
1.60ghz
Rage 128 Pro Ultra GL AGP (MS)
Screen Depth at 16 bit
ISP: AOL

If you need more info on my system please ask. If you\'re just going to make fun of me then guess which finger I\'m holding up.

First off, PS worked fine after I downloaded it and ran the updater. I actually read through the PS site and most of the forum while waiting for it to DL. It was very laggy, but I knew I would get lag. It only took me about 20 to 30 minutes to loggin the first time then after that it only took about 10 to 15 minutes each time.

Prolog:
A few days into playing PS I was outside the city and \"fell\" off one of the roads leading away from it (city). I couldn\'t get back onto \"land\" so I just \"/spawn\" out. It didn\'t work. But I know I \"/spawn\" a couple of days before down in the dungeons and it worked without any problems just really really bad lag. So I logged out and ran the updater one more time. Logged back in and \"/spawn\" and poof! It worked! I was happy yadda yadda yadda. Played  a few hours and logged off. That was last Thursday or early Friday.

Problem:
I  logged back in last Friday night and after 30 minutes I finally got a 1st person view but I was frozen. I thought it was lag so I just waited.... 10 minutes... 15 minutes... 20 minutes... nothing... couldn\'t move and nothing in the chat box. I thought maybe it was the server. Nope. Showed it was online with 20+ people. Thought maybe it was the weekend and it was just real busy etc. Logged off and tried again through out the weekend and still had the same frozen problem. I even logged in and let it set for about 2 to 3 hours while I went shopping and I was still frozen in place in 1st person view.

Monday I went through the forums. This is what I tried... (btw I let each login run for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours)

1. Changed depth from 16 bit to 32 bit and changed screen size from 800x600 to 700x500.
Nothing. Changed both back.

2. Changed ram by \"my computer>properties>advanced>proformance>advance>virtual memory>\" and change it from 200mb to 500mb.
Nothing. Changed it back.

3. Went to www.glsetup.com and downloaded the opengl driver but it only runs on windows 95 or 98. Changed the compatibilty on the driver installer to 95 then to 98 and both times got the error \"could not load DLL library c:\\programs\\files\\glsetup\\glmatch.dll the specific procedure could not be found.\"

4. Changed the compatibilty on the psclient.exe to windows 95 then 98 then 2000.
Nothing. Changed it back to XP.

Anyone out there got any ideas? PS was working for me just fine (except for the lag-from-hell) before. The only thing I haven\'t done is reinstall it and I\'m about to do that later tonight. But I wanted to know if  anyone had any ideas first. Thanks.

It took you 15 minutes to log on after the first one? Hmm... well I would put that down to low RAM, which happens to be the only important spec you didn\'t tell of.

Considering how thoroughly you\'ve gone about trying to find a solution so far, I can\'t really suggest anything else you could do other than reinstall. At least it only takes a couple of minutes. :)

Ah I see. RAM is cheap these days, you should pick up a few sticks, see if that helps at all.

Fragnetics Server News:

2003.08.29

The Fragnetics team will be conducting load tests on the server Planeshift is hosted on by reintroducing other game servers to the system. Performance of Planeshift may be affected during this period. Should regular players experience some degradation in performance please voice your views on the forums.

They started on the Friday my problems with PS began. But then again I seem to be the only one with this problem so could it be coincidence? Hmmm.

As for more RAM? I know I could use it, but PS was running on my pc at 128 RAM before I got frozen. Granted, I was lagging too but down in the dungeon I didn\'t get that much lag. I mainly got lag above ground a lot. And it\'s to my understanding and reading all the posts here about lag issues it seems most everybody gets laggy from time to time even with 500+RAM since the game is still in beta/alpha etc. But you\'re right, I do need more RAM eventually.

Did reinstall last night and nothing has changed. So I went all out and deleted all PS files and redownloaded the whole thing (5+hrs).

I\'m still frozen.

Still seeing a 1st person view of the same damn wall.

I talk to the wall for guidence.

I pray to the wall for a miracle.

The wall ignores me.

The wall mocks me.

The wall must die.

The following pic is what happens when you sit infront of your monitor waiting for PS to load. Poor chick didn\'t stand a chance...

EDIT: I have no freakin\' idea why the link won\'t work. I think my pc and the \'net are against me this week. DAM YOU BILL GATES!!!!

Well, it looks like I\'m out. Too bad. I really enjoyed the game. But I\'ll give PS a try once a week or so to see if I ever got unfrozen. I\'ll check the boards for any info from time to time too. Other than that I guess I\'ll have to wait for the next version in December (?) that is if I remember to do it. I just hope this doesn\'t turn into a \"spoonscaper\" run-around. The team for PS seem like good people.

Until the next version.... bye.

EDIT: Btw, I got 512mb of ram put in today. I\'m still frozen but atleast I can really enjoy other online games I play even better now. So thanks for suggesting more ram. See you in December.
