Already logged on!?

Sorry if this has been asked before (I\'ve looked through the FAQs and the forums without finding what I\'m looking for)

When I try to connect I get a message saying I\'m already logged on, which I clearly am not. Any ideas? Last time I was playing I jumped off the tempel tower (heh!), after which the game froze; do you think this little incident might have caused my account to mess up? I\'ve checked it though, and my account is still said to be valid.

After you\'ve logged of, or tried to log on, you must wait about one minute before trying to log on again, that might be whats causing your problem.

probably not. I\'ve waited several minutes in between attempts, but the problem remains. but thanks anyway.

This happened to me once before, I logged in as a different character to make sure no one was hijacking my valuable shineys; after that, I could log in normally.  I\'m not sure if logging in as a different character fixed it, or the time it took me to ask if someone was logged in using my name.

The general reason for \"You are already logged on\" messages is because of the way the network works.  We use something called UDP.  This is a connectionless type system were information just sent out onto the network and you hope that it gets there.  ( Unlike TCP where you have more of an end to end connection )

Because of this if you client crashes or you don\'t disconnect cleanly the server has no real way of knowing that you are not there.  So it keeps your \'character\' online for a little while in case it starts to get messages from you again.  If it doesn\'t hear from you fro a while then it assumes you are offline and removes your character.  A good addition here may be to \'resume\' or \'re-establish\' but that is a fair bit of work for not much gain at this moment.  This is left as an excersize for the reader.

Okay. I\'ve read the faqs. I\'ve checked the server status. I\'ve updated my firewall stats.

I\'ve even waited for half an hour.

Why do I still receive the message that I\'m still connected?
