Is there any skill level cap?
« on: September 23, 2003, 06:37:09 am »
I think it would be best if you cannot can raise/master ALL skills given enough time.

This leads to people becoming a thief/mage/fighter/other all in one. It\'s not very fun to see a do-it-all excel at say thieveing as well as a person specialized only in thieving.

There should be some restriciton that disallows a person to master all skills. That way, it encourages the person to specialize and make smart decisions about how his/her character can survive at higher levels.

For example, a do-it-all would have a 50% skill level cap in hand to hand combat if he already specialized too much in other skills. That way, a person that specializes in hand to hand would be much more adept at it.

Specialization would also encourage coop play and so forth.

Definitely a good idea. I really liked the way UO handled it, you could choose any skills you wanted, without any restrictions, but you couldn\'t become a master of everything.

nah, I think u should be able to master everything given enough time. As the time is would take to do that would be huge there isn\'t any point in stopping people doing it.

Here\'s an idea, say there is a skill point cap.  Normally, the cap would be restricting enough to force you to focus on a specific archetype (i.e. wizard, fighter, etc.) with just enough to pick up some skills on the side.  However there are multiple Quests of Acension (hereafter QoAs) which can only be completed once.  Each QoA would be related to the highest possible skill that\'s directly related to an archetype, and you can only start a QoA if you have that skill.  A QoA would add even more skill points to your maximum.  It would take a rather large amount of time, patience, and energy to complete all of the QoAs and master all the skills.

However, this system is greatly flawed due to its relyance on archetypes, which are the skill-based system\'s equivelent to classes; thusly, using this system would restrict the flexibility of skill system as awhole.

For the near future, not at all. For the mid future, you will have to earn more exp to gain skills, in essence it will take you about 20x more exp to get 10 skills up to 100 as it would 5...while people may see faults with this and how some have heard it will work, it will work well, the issue is some of us have thoughts of adding a very specialized field after a certain point so as you become really good, you can really micromanage what it is that you do.

This would alow you to still noticeably progress, but with big limitations.

So to answer your question/statement. No you will be able to master everything, and I would love to see guilds create champions for themselves...the entire guild takes time and effort to make one character really really huge, the character is on 24/7/356... at least this way we will know when we need to add stuff for the high end players :-) and no, we will not keep up, but we might be closer then many games have been.
