There are various reasons for titles.It lets people know who the leaders are.It also makes a chain of command.In units or groups if done right everyone has certain duties.These titles often help people to understand thier duties.It also makes it so others in or out of the group know whom to talk to.
Bear in mind titles are useless if there is no meaning behind them.For instance if i was to say i was king as you put it.It would be nothing but a name or a word unless I had followers.
Now with followers and leaders they give these titles meaning.A strong leader is able to see the strengths and weakness of people in his group.Hence why some people get promotions in the milatary while others dont.
It also gives something back to the Leader or leaders if their good your a reflection of them the same goes for if your bad.In clans guilds society people tend to need someone to go to to decide differences or judge or someone to motivate them or protect them.
While it may seem to people alot of the time that being the leader is all that .It is usally much easier to be a follower since people arent counting on you as much.When your the leader everyone expects certain things from you.If your a good leader or have a good leader they do what is needed to help in anyway they can.
Bad leaders are the kind that are up above the rest and feel as if everyone owes them something.
In a perfect situation A leader serves His/Her group as much if not more than the group serves the leader.
