« on: October 02, 2003, 11:23:16 am »
Ok, i know this is the medival ages, but I think this thing don\'t affect the game play in a negative way.

What about a book in the libary that u can read and write to the forum? I think that should be great.. But as i sad before, its a litle sci fi

You mean books in-game? They will be in the game, as far as I know. And what makes it sci-fi?

EDIT: 50th post, not a newbie anymore!

I\'m not sure if sci-fi is the right word, but anyway...

What you\'re talking about is some kind of notice-board with a direct link to the forum, right?
Not very neccecary, but it\'s still a good idea :)

Hmm... Well then, let\'s think about reasons WHY it could be useful...
Oh, and perhaps it shouldn\'t be a book in a library, but a notebook you can carry (and can\'t lose).
You can use it to:
1. Report bugs
2. Report cheaters
3. Report people who\'re being abusive

Perhaps it can also (automatically) include the last 30 chat messages said...
Just my 2 cents ;)

hmm.. something too report bugs in-game would be nice, everytime you encounter a bug now you would have to log off, go to the forums, post and then go through the whole loading thingie again..

Hey Cool idea, Commando.
But well kind of hard to do I guess. This forum is not made by PS team it\'s just a applet so the one making this thing would have to learn how the database is biult and the MySQL database would have to be on the game server this forum is on a webserver.
Put the pot down, no dont take another puff!, put it down. Thank you.

Fun that u like my ide. It wouldn\'t be too hard to fix i gues. I mean the server uses MySQL right? The board, is it hosted by a third comp or do u have full access to the database where the post is stored? If so, just put in some extra code in the exclent game.

EDIT: The mysql server can be set to allow extern connections, right?

why not just *gasp* use the forums in a browser?

oh i suppose you\'re playing fullscreen.. *then* i spose you\'d have to log off.. i kinda forgot there was a fullscreen mode :p

still, nice idea.. dunno how practical it would be though

OR, you could just have a separate tty where you\'d run lynx or links ...well, if you have a *NIX system that is :P

but i still think it\'s not a bad idea.

yup it\'s a Linux, Unix, other *nix thingie ...you have more then one (default 6; i use 11) virtual console - think like running 6 (or 11 in my case) _very_ VERY advanced DOS shells, and when (if) you use a GUI, you also have several desktops (default 4; mine 6) - think like running several (in my case 6) windows sessions at the same time ...you can switch from one to the other tty (= virtual console) or desktop with a simple key combo like alt+F1 (to enter tty1), alt+F2 (tty2) ...

the end result is like if you\'d run 6 (in my case 11) DOS boxes and 4 (in my case 6) windows boxes on the same PC. these can and are supposed to (and they do) live in a perfect symbiosys :D ...it\'s GREAT

...lynx and links are ASCII-based internet browsers, the first is a standard and very old (still being developed though!) legendary browser, and the latter being similar to the first one, only that it has a GUI (if you want it to), can show pictures, and supports frames (which the first doesn\'t)

i think i\'ve made things a bit more clear to the non-*nix part of the community :D what i meant with my (first) confusing post was that under linux, unix, other *nix you could run PS in fullscreen in the GUI, and still have all the tty (virtual consoles) free to run irc, icq, lynx or links to browse the \'net, play music with a ASCII-based mp3/ogg or cd player ...i just love these limitless possibilities :]

Yes, multiple terminals in linux is very handy for a lot of things.  It\'s nice in the GUI because you can have tons of windows open and still have lots of space.  It\'s handy in console-mode because you can be running different commands at the same time.

And lynx is absolutely cool!  I installed it on the linux system I\'m working on which is only at the console stage, and it was able to translate php forums!  I was able to read and post messages on a forum just like this one, only in pure text mode!  :D

EQ had something like this, it was just a board in some select taverns.  Of course, it was so spammed, you couldn\'t find anything of use there...

Of course, to report bugs and cheaters, it would be silly to implement an item.  Why not just have commands?  It would be far easier, and more convienant.  SWG had a nice bug reporting system.  There was a Customer Service menu were you would file tickets.  Tickets could be about whatever problem you might have in-game.  After filing the ticket, you could track its progress, and eventually would get a response from a representitive.

Actually this wouldn\'t be as hard as you\'r making it. First of all the \"applet\" is open source I believe although applet is a misnomer. since its in php. So the database structure and such are freely available to pick apart. Additionally using an xml translator between the two should make it possible to integrate the two systems. just have a translator app. If the board already has RSS implemented then the messages could be served up to the game server using that, making the task that much easier. And all you have to have to do to post from the game is use the same format as the the website uses to post form data to the page.  It wouldn\'t really be all that hard and its a good idea. lots of applications these days are integrating with web technologies more and more.
