Places of interest
« on: October 04, 2003, 03:29:53 pm »
Okey first off, I must admit I haven\'t searched to forum if someone else has posted the same idea as I have but I don\'t know how to check in this case.

The idea.

I thought it would be cool and realy helpfull if we give some structure where people can depend on. Planeshift will become a massive world with alot of places. So the biggest problem is where to search for things. Let\'s for example say I want to learn how I must play the game. I don\'t think there will be alot of players that will help me to fully answer all my questions. It\'s truh that some people do (like me at the moment), but the most people just want to slash each other. So I thought it would be a great idea if there were places ( well known about there legendary reputation) where they would do a kind of practise.
In this example I would than know that Noob city has a hudge reputation on helping noobs. Many teachers are there that try to help people to untherstand the game. Or maybe there is a castle where many players practise magic and you know you can go there for magical help.

I don\'t know if this would work in practise, but at least there could be created some places in the world that increase the chance that people will act like this. By this I mean, having castles, city halls, big builings that you can enter. It would be like common meating places for people with the same interest. Like having a colloseum, where every one can go to see people battle or to show off your skills your self.

I like the guild idea, but I think this could be a great suplement to what we already have:).

P.S. I intentionaly kept a litle fage in the hope that there will be room for further ideas on this, without Influencing the creative minds:).

I think the game should just have an intro part, that teaches you the basics about the game, and then it could be an individual choice if you want to learn about the more advanced things (don\'t know what they are going to be yet)

I know that there aren\'t many, kind enough to want to help newbs, but there are some players, and these could be asked about questions, I don\'t think we need specifik places for newbs to go, after the intro part of the game (should that idea be implemented)

You could also try learning the game by yourself, granted you have the time and willingness to do so :P

...Or you could of course go to the local library (in game) and read all you wanna know for yourself. People have a bad habit of jumping over the tutorial anyway, to try to learn the game for themselfes. Then when they\'ve asked all their stupid questions that nobody really wanna answer they get bored with the game and write to the forums about how bad the game is just because they\'re too lazy to read the manual.

That\'s why I am working on a mandatory tutorial .avi movie that must play, and is uninterruptable whenever you play the game first....I don\'t think it will add too much space to the download time at all, and it keeps people from playing a game that they aren\'t looking for, or gives them a better idea of the game.

(This is not DIABLO. Don\'t play it like DIABLO, this is not EQ. Don\'t expect it to ever be.)

I was thinking of a little these are the buttons, this is a fight sequence, this is how you pick up things, these are the basic commands, and basic ediquite(sp). That way we don\'t have to mess with the jerks who just don\'t feel like reading anything, even after we have told them where to find the guide.

Those are usually the 12-14 year-olds. They have short attention spans thankfully. It\'s heart breaking to see a name like Cloud, or  xXThe PainbringerXx, or NNNNNNNNNNNN in the game. Fortunetly, those people never come back, usually because they are forced to read.

What could be \"optional\" is the history of Ylaikum, and info about the races....there should also be a mandatory IQ test at the begining of the game =P

A whole AVI eh?  That seems a bit much, I think just maybe a larger notice somewhere that mentions the game is a work in progress would take care of most of that.  I know most demos that are released from unfinished products always make that very clear before you play the game.
Ninjas have feelings too.  Mostly they feel like dancing.

Planeshift already gives a notice during the installation at the license agreement, in caps it says \"THIS IS NOT A FULL GAME\" or something the other, and yet, people still ask how to fight, or how to smity something. The fact is, most everyone doesn\'t go pour their imaginations and watch the flash intro 7 times to see the cool pictures, or read about the history of Ylaikum, and wonder what Talad looks like. And then read up on the players guide a couple times so they don\'t embarass themselves...very few people care to try, many think this is Diablo...or Everquest (shudder), but then there are those who are honestly confused and lost, and maybe are not very familiar with MMORPG\'s. I don\'t think an AVI is too much, just a minute or two couldn\'t hurt anyone I guess...I sure wouldn\'t mind. A big NPC near the spawn point that shouts THIS ISN\'T A FULL GAME, SHUSH! Whenever the key word \"crouch\" or \"how do you/u fight?\" was ever shouted would be nice, but sad to say too funny to come true.

P.S. I also think that the NPC should boot anyone who says \"This game sucks\" immedietly and with no warning. We could call him Conan O\'Brien.

I think an AVI would add too much to the filesize, maybe a slideshow of some sort would be better?

Thanks every one for making this in a how can we teach noobs thread. But that WASN\'T my intention. My intention whas bringing the idea of \"interest areas\" places where people come to a sertun thing. Like fighting each other exchange knowledge, trade weopons, get healing (you don\'t wanna play unless you can get healed if you are a warrior or so :P ).

I hoped a admin would remove the post  above. But I\'ll try to get the topic back this way. :O

Please only post an reaction to the thread topic :(
