Suggestion

I have been privvy to a nice little voice chat client called TeamSpeak and it seems many MMO players have heard of this.It is kinda like voice irc.In later versions of the game it would be quite useful for guilds to use this during events to communicate with each other instead of having to stop the event and type a /guild message. I have been running it on my little 1.1 ghz comp and have had little problems with BandWidth and resource use.Maybe instead of giving out webspace we could get fragnetics to install it on a server and set up a main room \"Planeshift Lounge\" and then have the guilds register for their own rooms with the server Admin. I think this could benefit the entire PS community rather than just 3 guilds. If interested you can get more info at http://www.teamspeak.org The problem with me running a server is that i need to shut down my comp so my IP address constantly changes.I was trying to find a dedicated server to run this and it would be great if Fragnetics could do it.And if you want to test it out i DO have a server on the server list under Circle of Legends.Just DL the right client and when you connect look under the webserver list for it then import it to your address book and connect with a username. If I am on you will see it and i would like to hear from visitors:)

I\'d like to clarify a few things:

1) While we don\'t have any intention of booting people once we issue them accounts, I think that we should have an informal agreement that at least allows us to withdraw our offer should the guild become non-functional (based on fuzzy guidelines) or dissolve. This is to ensure that we get a comfortable level of commitment that show that the guilds appreciate our services. I personally don\'t think the quality of the webpage matters, but instead whether the resources we provide are used effectively. If not, we should have the right to give the account to another guild. I can promise you that we will not boot you for no rhyme or reason - We would like to think of ourselves as mature, responsible young men, who can at least be rational about the decisions we make.

2) This offer should not be construed as some kind of political leverage. Fragnetics and the PlaneShift devs function very independently of each other but share a close \'working\' relationship. I say \'working\' because we take it more like a collaboration (or in PS terms, Fragnetics are contributors), rather than co-\"workers\". Our guys enjoy hosting the game, although we don\'t play it regularly, and we certainly hope PS takes hold in our region of the world. Furthermore, we do not expect to be the sole host of PS in future and hence don\'t see ourselves as any kind of political force.

3) When we make this offer for free hosting, we are not implying that these guilds are any better than the rest. Frankly speaking, our hosting quality is not as high as other hosts (we only offer 99% compared to say 99.9% availability). Also, we\'re making this offer because we think that some guilds, regardless of reputation and stature, may find that they could use a hosting service with no popups, side-ads and stuff. We are offering an alternative, and not suggesting that this solution is any better than others.

4) We are limiting the number of guilds to 3 for the time being - This is because I think that offering too many would dilute the exclusivity of the offer. This may sound like it contradicts point 3, but I beg to differ. Instead, what we want is just to have guilds show a decent level of commitment to this offer, just as we make the commitment to host them. To put things in perspective, if such a scheme is successful we may decide to issue more accounts in future. If it really sucks then you should know where these accounts are headed.

5) We will not be providing domains to these guilds but can issue them directories under a subdomain such as planeshift.fragnetics.com (I will need to discuss this with the devs before I can issue this) or guilds.fragnetics.com (which we can decide on unilaterally). Guilds who purchase their own domains can park them with us for free as well. We are providing this service at no extra financial cost to us, hence we do not intend to offer domains as part of the deal.

6) This offer has been made without consulting the PS devs (so far). We\'ve taken this step because we\'re only offering a hosting service and not tying it to PlaneShift directly (which is why I can\'t just issue accounts under planeshift.fragnetics.com).

7) I would like to point out that Fragnetics is not likely to be an exclusive host for PlaneShift in future, and so your decision to apply should take that into consideration. We will continue to support web hosted guilds regardless of which server they play on, since we think PlaneShift is cool and are committed to the gaming community centred on it.

I\'m speculating a bit on our status as hosts because as contributors we are not privy to sensitive discussions that go on within the PlaneShift committee. However, based on our recent correspondence we are confident that we will be hosting PlaneShift for a looonggg time to come... As long as we don\'t suddenly shut down anyway  :D

Chrischoo, please pass along to your colleagues as well that the PS dev team team deeply appreciates all your company is doing for PS, including this generous offer.  You guys rock!  :-)

As always we\'re happy to be a part of PlaneShift. I\'m leaving it to Mogura to figure it out the registrations for us since I\'m not the best person to ask when it comes to activity on our server. I don\'t keep a close tab on the guilds and am not in-the-know when it comes to the PS community at large.

My first suggestion on how we can begin is to find out who might be keen and have them drop Mogura an e-mail or PM indicating their interest.

An earlier suggestion on getting web designers to do up the server pages didn\'t really take off so to be frank I don\'t expect a flood of applications. It\'s a small token we can offer though, and considering that we can back it up with a MySQL account and PHP scripting support should make it more functional, especially for those who might be thinking of something more advanced.

ok, ArcaneOrder needs a good host as our server with mysql database is way to slow for our forum. we already have a website up that contains most of the content(http://www.arcaneorder.cjb.net/) and a new website that will be used when we might get this hosting(http://www.arcane-order.net.ms/)
we really need this hosting as all the council decisions are made on the forums, and it takes about 2 minutes to load a page..

I second that!!

I\'m really, really tired of having to wait 2 minutes for each and every subforum/thread I have to load ;(

I propose a neutral commitee be constituted to look into the matter out of the PS community. They can judge best. Let the guilds apply and then judge them for their comittedness, activity, relevance to PS, organisation. Without any one of these guilds tend to crumble. I also suggest that members of this commitee be kept secret.

BTW-
I wouldn\'t like to join the fray. The Cabal\'s interests are served best if its data remains scatttered over many anonymous servers. Though I still dont know the mind of other guild members. I\'ll consult them and find out.

Thank you for the input, Auran. We\'re currently letting this idea sleep untill CB, but we\'ll most likely follow your idea of an annonymous (but reliable) commitee of judges.

What about devs? I think it is difficult to find more reliable and neutral... The only questions is if they have time to spend like that...
