The Printed Media
« on: October 25, 2003, 05:22:31 pm »
Greetings fellow Planeshifters

There have been in the recent past a lot of proposals and questions regarding printed media in PS(i mean in RP terms not actually printed). I don\'t know what the progress is on the said issue but I for one would like to see a newspaper in regulation in Yliakum. Prior to its ingame implementation, it can be started off as a periodical web chronicle. I have a proposal regarding this but I will present it once I have enough public approval. So what say you ppl. Shall this be or not? Please post your reply here. Also post if you would like to actively participate in such an endeavour and, if so, in what capacity?

thank you

PS-
For those that are concerned about me being assoiated with this newspaper can rest assured that I will not be in a controlling position for the publication.

Well, yes I think it is a pretty good idea, I think everyone agrees with that, it could work like their old newsletter thing (which they only did one issue of :P ) I would also help out (a lot) if possible, but these things in PS seem to not last long...

To Kiern in particular and everyone else in general:

Oh dont let longevity or persistence bother you. If this really starts off well then it\'ll maintain momentum.

Yeah, but how do you know if it has started off well?  The problem is the leader of the project might just disappear one day and we wouldn\'t be able to do anything about it...and if that happend too often then the whole thing would fall apart and that is usually what happens around here.

Not that I\'m saying I won\'t support it and help out, but I am just pointing that out.

Its a perfect idea,

I myself could use a personal reporter. He/she will be allowed to follow me and write down all the great things i do, dwarven i save, countries i conquer, and, when i save PS from the doomed evil creatures ( couldnt think of a name)

Then the reporter will write a daily based news paper.
People can buy it and 50 , nah , 10% of the income will go to the dwarven foundation.
Thats the foundation of dwarven who have a project to mine a dwarven city.

Wouldn\'t that be great  !!!!

Gion.

I wasn\'t presenting an idea for discussion. I said in the starter post that I was hearing a lot of discussion but didn\'t observe any activity. I wanted to get a paper started right away and was asking for support from likeminded people. But I have given it up now. People here are too lazy to move their asses and do things, all they wanna do is talk about themX( *shakes fist in the community\'s general direction*

\"newspaper\" in medieval times? ?(
that\'s crazy, discovery that allowed newspapers to be made was one of events that end medieval times...

just as crazy as having a living chunk of minerals or reptile ppl. This isn\'t authentic medieval setting buddy. Its a fantasty.

BTW- the ancient romans had something similar to the newspaper but it was more like a noticeboard

yes, it\'s fantasy setting, but placed in medieval times. Since it\'s fantasy it allows various races and lots of magic. Still it doesn\'t allow to implement some discoveries, discovery that allowed making newspapers is one of them. If you don\'t get it, machine guns are good examples too ;)
In medievals everything was writen by hand. Sure PS isn\'t authentic medieval setting, but if you add some stuff (like newspapers) then it won\'t be medieval setting at all
and yes Auran, noticeboard, that\'s what was used in medieval times!

I dunno, I think it\'s a comprimise between absolute realism and the benifits...

Plus, it wouldn\'t be too hard to \"invent\" since most of the races are above average intelligence:

Carve a letter out of wood and use ink from berries to stamp it to a peice of parchment, make 26 stamps and a few punctuation marks and there you go, from there on in the efficiency of the process would be improved by some Xacha inventing a press of some sort, after all, didn\'t most races come from other worlds? I am not saying it is delivered to everyone\'s door steps, but at least it is possible.

The temple, style of houses and amount of people should suggest for a certain level of technilogical advancement. I think a small printing press wouldn\'t be too much to ask...

I don\'t believe something like that would ruin the fantasy setting too much, as long as ads were kept out of it and such. Again I am talking about one page articles or a summary of major events, not the New York Times or a Wall Street Journal.

I still like the idea of a noticeboard more than a newspaper, it seems more... appropriate.
