Starting City
« on: November 04, 2003, 02:26:52 am »
You know me by now,

In Final Fantasy XI, in the beginning you are given to an option to choose one of three places to begin in. I think this should be done also. By doing this you can alleviate the crowd that builds up if everyone started in the same city.

I think there should be an option given to us, to choose which city or area we would like to start in also.

Well, You see the game is Pretty New so That is why there is only 1 city. In CB HOPEfully (This is just me assuming here) There will be more cities, yet the choice to go to them might come much later than CB. Since You can make an adventure out of visiting the other cities, and the fact the other cities may have stronger monsters around them and better weapons to buy.

Well, thats my 2 cents.

Edit: Wow, I usualy dont get the first Reply in.....

Edit2: Ah yes and excuse my Grammer if you are confused, I have a nasty lil habit of thinking faster than i can type :)

Well there\'s two sides to this.

Lets say that everyone did start in the same city.  Then it could be a sort of \"newbie-town\" with NPC\'s whose primary purpose was to help people understand the game.  And outside the city could be some low-level monsters for them to fight.  As they got experienced enough, they would move out into areas better suited for them.

Plus, anyone who is sick of newbs running around asking for free galkards would just keep clear of this starting city, where most of them would likely hang out.

By randomizing the starting city, there\'s greater dispersion.  This could also be a good thing because they wouldn\'t just be surrounded by newbs, but instead by experienced players who could help them out.

So it could work either way.

well ya there are two sides its tough. Hmmm, maybe each city that you can choose to start off with is geographically different. Maybe one city is desert based, one is forest, one is mountain, one is huge metropolitic city etc... I\"m just getting ideas off my head. I think this is a good thread that admins should get involved with.

As i saw in the Wish List forum, some cities will have very different populations and activities. As you can choose a job and a race at startup, i think a nice thing will be to put you in the city where your race/job is dominant.

nice mug :D

Great!
I\'m for planA. PlanB would be good when there would masses of active players, not before.

New players should have the ability to choose any number of towns, all of which have low level monsters all the way around for a certain distance and then progress to more difficult monsters the further you get from town, with the exception of portals to dungeons, etc.

At the same time, you can state which town is based on a specific race, then the player could choose.

It\'s simply a matter of whether or not you want to develop multiple newb areas, or a single one.  If you do have spread out initial points, then that means every area you can start at has to have newb type stuff in it.  Although that might sound like more work, or an excess of newb level material, it does make logical sense.  Assuming the starting cities would be the larger more prominent ones, the surrounding areas would naturally be safer for newbs being the cities are large population hubs.

choosing place you want to begin in sounds alot like EQ ......... normally you can choose from a place to start if your a certain race. I would like just one race start in their own city or everyone starting in one place .... maybe

i like the ro style since you can buy the weapons and stuff you need in the places you need because you are already there.

Warning EQ Alert
« Reply #14 on: November 09, 2003, 07:20:25 am »
Don\'t you think this game should be just a tad bit different from EQ???? Look at it! I can barely name any differences. This starting city could be the Lumbridge in RS. It just should be a newbie zone. Surronded by low-level monsters and tutorial npc\'s.  Individuality peoples!
