Cooking

Has anyone discussed the trade skill of cooking yet?

If not, I thought it would be a good idea to start coming up with ideas for cooking, and link it all in with the game lore.

Would be fun, like toasting raw meat or fish or baking bread. I haven\'t searched thoroughly but didn\'t notice it discussed anywhere ; in the next release do you have to eat/drink to stay alive? I hope so, adds some more depth and realism, as long as food isn\'t too hard to obtain ie. you don\'t have to be worried of starving all the time ;-)

Now now, lynx. If people only want to read the first post before replying, let them. Not everyone has the patience to read other threads as well. :)

Moraine - Yes, cooking has been discussed many times - some times more than others.

Those are just two threads with the same topic. :)

There exists the problem inherent in many mmrpgs.... you can buy food so why cook?

Here\'s my take on the subject.... some environments can be designed so that better lootage and riches are found in places faraway from towns where you can buy food.

This will give incentive for people to specialize in cooking.... Or for merchants with great carrying abilities to set up a fast food stand... hehe

Another idea is that bought food will rot very quickly. If you cook the food, you will be able to store it for longer journeys.

Anyway... imagine the many people incapacitated by starvation.... There\'s $$$ to be made as a fast food chef.

Well I agree on one concept, in many games why bother cooking when you can buy food from a vendor?  But many times it\'s a lot cheaper with game money to buy the stuff to cook from scratch yourself.  By making food yourself, your cooking skill will increase.

Cooks can be very valuable for quests when gamers have to either make their own stuff for quest items or pay game money to someone else who can do it for them.

Also cooks (in other games) can make more powerful food than what the vendors provide.

How about this?

Without food, the character won\'t be able to perform any skill.

Store bought food will not give any bonuses, but at least allow you to fight monsters for a while.

Food cooked yourself would give stat bonuses, such as more strength. As your cooking skill increases, the better bonuses you can obtain.

A person who is really desperate would eat raw meat or even rotten food. This will give negative stats, or even get you poisoned.... But at least the person won\'t be easy picking by monsters.

Well I think before we get into the bonuses of cooking a foundation must be established before tertiary ideas can be interjected because the fundamentals of cooking build on how much can be accomplished.

In simpler terms, what kind of food will be allowed, e.g Will the type of food used be respected to the allotted time period? What styles of cooking are there? What kind of ingredients will be established as necessary? Do certain races eat only a certain type of food? As the Kran being the rock based lifeform, are they the only race that eats rocks? How much will cooking benefit from other skills such as fishing, woodcutting, alchemy, etc...What type of food will be considered easy or hard to cook? How are cooking materials gathered? What kind of cooking tools are needed? Do you even have to cook, can you just go to a restaurant?

I believe for cooking fundamentals are deemed a necessary since cooking is based on experience. Think of it this way, when you were young you probably made like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which are very simple. Then as you got older you started making grilled cheese sandwiches, even though its easy to make it took more skill now, you didn\'t want to burn the cheese but still keep it melted plus keep the bread toasty. Now your a teen and your baking cookies or cakes for mom or dad as a present or something. Now its getting hard because there\'s a lot of materials and you have to bake it just right little by little, watching after it so it doesn\'t burn. Then if there are any parentsm college students, or chefs here, sometimes you have to cooking Thanksgiving or Christmas meals and it just gets crazy from there...blah blah, you get my drift?

What you\'re basically referring to is how the cooking skill will work.

I think it would be too complex to have your example.

For example, a low level cook would make fish sticks with a catfish. A high level cook would make a baked fish with foie de gras inserted into its cut slits and wrapped in a fat netting..... It doesn\'t seem to add much to the gameplay does it?

My suggestion is this. Let\'s say the cooking skill level ranges from 1-100. Food allows you to use your skills for a duration. For example, you can still swing your sword as long as your stomach is not empty.

Here\'s an example of skill level descriptions for cooking a catfish:
Lvl 1-10: +5 minutes before starvation kicks in.
Lvl 11-30: +10 minutes
Lvl 31-60: +25 minutes AND +5 strength
...
...
Lvl 100: +50 minutes, +50 strength

And you can have better durations with better food.

Hey Bud, I have without a doubt what you said is perfectly hundred percent valid. But I think it does make it more interesting because why make a cooked fish at a low experience level and still make cooked fish at a high experience level. Since your experience grows its only safe to say that your cooking abilities have improved. Therefore the cooking skill you used should be used to its full potential, otherwise in reality there would be no use for gaining experience for cooking. I also think you should be able to cook anytime whenever you want. But again what you said is no doubt in my mind a perfectly valid idea.
