Right on with the King Crimson!  8) I haven't really heard too much of the other two, but I just got into King Crimson about two months ago, maybe... That's some good stuff!

The odd thing about King Crimson is much of it requires seasoning to be fully appreciated. They have mostly operated under the radar and not received much radio play. The Court of the Crimson King got quite a bit when it came out as prog was all the rage in the seventies, the next few albums receive little notice although Larks Tongue in Aspic was somewhat of the culmination of a redefinition, new members harder edge etc then there was another retooling resulting in the "Three of a Perfect Pair" trio of albums, Discipline, Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair, which at the time I did not much appreciate as I was stuck on Larks Tongue which was quite different. Now having acquired the whole bunch I find I like the latter works more. Hopefully there will be more new stuff coming.

Frank Zappa had a long career  which also received little radio play, what he got was mostly on the FM band, he did have a number of hits but mostly pilloried the music business and did his own thing. Among his best works, in my opinion, are Overnight Sensation and Apostrophe. These were, I believe, also his most commercially successful albums although songs from Sheik Yerbouti and Joe's Garage got a fair bit of airplay. Like King Crimson he was into the craft of musicianship experimenting with different time signatures and odd instrumentation. Some of the albums previous to Overnight Sensation and Apostrophe produced live standards although he used many different musicians throughout his career and they did not always get played the same.

Porcupine Tree is a different kettle of fish being started by a guy in his basement under the pretext of being a lost masterband from the seventies. It is kind of hard to come across in the music stores around here but what I have heard is quite engaging.

Unfortunately I don't know a whole lot about King Crimson, but I'd really like to.  The only stuff I've heard is what I've found on the internet, but I've been meaning for a while now to scrape together $15 and buy a few vinyls.  What makes them so interesting, I think, is all the underlying jazz and classical influences; it's like they've stripped rock down to its bare elements, and replaced blues as the driving influence with jazz and classical music.  And don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the blues; I listen to John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, Buddy Guy, etc whenever I get a chance, but I think it just makes for an infinitely interesting sound.  Plus they have such a crazy history, as far as members entering and leaving the band and all.  Any fans might want to kill me for making this comparison, but it sort of reminds me of Queens of the Stone Age, where the brain behind it all is the only real constant and the other members come and go constantly, causing so many interesting relationships and such.

Well the articles on Wikipedia will be a good place to start, they also have links to the official page. Alt least you will be able to see the discography and timelines.

Guess all I have to add to that is Tangerine dream and Kraftwerk although, those are also some of my more liked bands mentioned above.

Interesting to see some better classic rock bands being discussed, though I do see people overanalyzing things.

I have a whack of the dream now and actually saw them once in the mid-seventies, they have come a long way from their origins. Kraftwerk I have not heard much about since "Autobahn" are they still kicking around?

Here is some inoffensive zappa from Apostrophe Stinkfoot live
apostrophe studio rip

Nooo this can't be happening!  :'( :'( :'(

I heard that there was some friction, and I know they didn't tour with Revelations because he was finishing work with his second solo album, but that's not good...

Hey, at least maybe now he'll join MY band!   \\o//

Frank Zappa just Rocks. got some great material.

Personal faves are Joe's Garage and Bobby Brown Goes Down, great songs, and id have to say his offensive songs are better ;o)

Gah!  How can you even stand him!!  Cause of all the opposition me and my Audioslave have been getting, I decided what the heck, I'll try to get into some Rage Against the Machine...

I STILL can't stand him!  And I tried, I realli tried.  Chris just has so much more class than him, not to mention talent, looks ;), and the best voice in rock today.

At least I still have his solo stuff... I practically jumped out of my seat and started screaming "Oh God, yes!" when I heard his song at the beginning of Casino Royale earlier. (Off topic, but that was surprisingly good for a Bond movie).

Have you listened to Zoot Allures Idoru? You might like The Torture Never Stops kind of a low quality amateur video of an early Zappa gig apparently from Argentina. The studio version is much better. This version lacks the woman moaning of the studio version which could be considered offensive by some, but it is interesting of itself.

Here are a couple tracks from Porcupine Tree, Blackest Eyes and Lazarus

Here is some King Crimson Red and Three of a Perfect Pair

You tube has a lot of stuff but the quality bites. Good for getting an idea though.
