Personally, I don\'t like the level system, because then all people do is go around saying \"lvl 51 fighter need party!\"  Without levels, I think people would be more inclined to actually communicate ( 8o ) with other people to join parties and such.

Arthureloi, PE is an insane download on 56k, but don\'t bother because the game is completely unplayable on that kind of connection.  I tried playing it with 56k but it is just plain impossible :(

Besides, you have to pay to play it (kinda) but I won\'t get in to explaining it.

Please Please Please don\'t ever change the ideas. No levels If  wanted that I would go back to capping out a character on a game like EQ where everyone seems to only care about what level they are and takes no intrest in the actual game.

Yes, you capture my point exactly Boldstorm :)

And Arthureloi, if you\'re interesting in playing a MMORPG, I\'d suggeset Mu Online.  It\'s what Gronomist and I are playing atm, and I think it\'s quite fun (it\'s hack \'n slash, but oh well).

If you decide to play it, check in to either IRC channel to see if Grono or I are on if you have any questions.  Enjoy :D

Anyone here played Morrowind?

It\'s single player, but it uses a skill based system to advance; if you fight with a sword, your sword skill goes up; if you run a lot, your acrobatics skill goes up, and so on.

You have to level 10 skills to go up one level, then you assign points for strength, agility, willpower, intelligence, personality, and whatnot.

The twist is this: you only get three points to assign.  But if you levelled a lot of skills that have strength as a primary attribute (i.e. fighting), then you get a multiplier to strength.  So you can put 1 point into, say, intelligence, where you don\'t have a multiplier, and go up by 1, or you can put it into your strength catagory with a 3 multiplier, and gain 3 pts of strength.

It lets you raise whatever skill you want, but it encourages realistic character growth.

The problem with that system is you end up trying to perfect EVERYTHING.

But just another possibility to consider.

Morrowind

Morrowind uses both - skill based and level based leveling. The way skill based leveling is that u have to suceed in doing something, like hitting an enemy with a sword or to cast a spell, to improve on the skill. So it\'s really hard to imrove if u start with an incredibly low summoning skill, because u ll close to never suceed in casting it.

Even though i hate how the combat ha been  done in Morrowind, i think it\'s a realy good way for leveling up.
There is a theorie which states that if the purpose of the universe is discovered, then it will turn into something more complex and inexplicible.

There is another, which states that it has already happened.

I\'d like to see a game where levelling doesn\'t get drastically harder when you get higher.

Idea:

If you kill something your level, you get 5 points. When you reach 100 points, you get a message \"You skill (blah) has increased!\" Then you get 1 point less for every level the creep is below you, and 2 points more for every level the creep is above you.

Note: Levels would have to be general combat levels to prevent unfairness. Being a level 94 merchant would suck if you only have 4 skill with a sword. Runescape went wrong on that aspect.

Um...why shall Runescape be censored?

why would that suck?
if i spent my life beeing a merchant then i probably had few time to practice my sword skills in the back room:)
i think the system they seem to be using is just great.
no lvls is awesome.
and it makes it more realistic.
yes REALISTIC *g*
although its a fantasy game, there should be some logical background.
i will definetly have one char that only does a normal everyday job.
no monsterhunt,no spellcasting.
but well,thats just my idea.

I think the system is good, I never played a game with that kind of system (lol, the only online games I played was Freeciv, Warcraft III and et, so this is my first MMORPG :D but I dont actually mean online games, just games in general) but I dont think it would be realistic (as you guys are saying) that I a builder, would be a mage on cost of my xp points that I gained in building :P

But everyone are saying it\'s realistic because you can\'t raise your mage abilities by swordfighting and other no-mage stuff :P

Have it like the morrowind system..have the skills in diff catogaries major, minor and misc..these are decided in character creation, and then you have to level 10 major or minor skills to lvl overall.

I dont understand why so much people want characterlevels. I mean with the skillbased system everyone has more than enough levels (one for each skill) to pose with.
If you want a short desc for your chars advancement, just take the average of all skilllevels.

Im more interested in job/combat ratings to see for others. (player choose which rating to show or no showing)

nah, it was too easy to overpower in Morrowind. As far as i remember by enhancing misc skills you could boost attributes multiplier at the leveling.
There was some old cRPG... \"Betrayal at Krondor\" i think... didn\'t play it long but i think that way skills were handled there would work better.
