It freezes or it just doesn\'t do anything? If the latter, just wait for 2hours and see. If it\'s not working then, come back here and ask some more.

still not working
« Reply #2 on: November 23, 2003, 10:43:19 pm »
I\'ve waited an 2 hour and the game is still not working. When i alt-tabbed from it, i couldn\'t open it anymore, and the window manager says it\'s not responding.

Any ideas about this?

Could you give us your system specs ?

Maybe you just haven\'t waited long enough. As long as you don\'t get an error message, let it run. It\'s only so long the first time, don\'t worry.

This is weird but here is what happened.
One time I ran the game for over 5 hours and it still didn\'t work. I noticed that it said that the program was not responding. I ended the program and I ran it again later the next day. The first time it froze and it didn\'t work. Then I tried again and went to get a drink and when i came back the game was running. Because it was really late and i was tired i just moved around the city for 15 minutes and then i closed the program. Since then i have tried to load the game ove 20 times and my computer always freezes. I havent changed any of the settings. Can anyone tell me how it worked ones and then it never worked again?
I have 256 ram
1 Gh

if anymore data is needed pls tell me.

Maybe you should take another drink  :D
Hum, sorry for that  ;)

Are you waiting long enough ? It takes usually about one minute to load, maybe more on your system since it seems slower. You can try to configure it in sofware mode just for testing purpose, it will load faster (use the PS Setup for that). Don\'t forget to put it back in OpenGL mode.

I suppose you did, but I prefer to ask : have you rebooted before trying again ?

And by the way, which graphics card do you have ? Are you sure your drivers are up to date ?

If it still doesn\'t work, I can\'t find anything else to suggest but to write down your login and password, uninstalling planeshift and being sure the directory is deleted, then installing it again.

256MB Ram isn\'t exactly much, considering PlaneShift: MB uses ~300MB just to initialize. Then again, if those 256MB are SDRam, it\'ll take even longer... But I don\'t know. All I know for sure is, that it shouldn\'t take 2 hours, no matter which computer you use.

I personally tested PlaneShift: AB (even more demanding than MB!) on a P2 266 MMX, with 64 ram, and it was doable. Took me approximately 20 minutes to initialize. So if it really doesn\'t load after an hour max, you seriously need to do some reconfiguration of your system. It\'s way too slow. :)

I have seen reports of first initialisations taking over 3 hours for MB, so I\'m not surprised anymore. Once again, this is only for the first time. A poor disk cache policy and a slow, fragmented harddisk can reduce drastically the performance of your system. It can be worse if you have a slow ram, like you said, and a small CPU cache.

Gronomist, were those 20 minutes achieved under Windows ? On a new installation ? It sounds pretty fast for this configuration, you may want to keep this computer, or try to sell it here at a very high price ;)

(maybe I\'m interested :] )
