Fall damage
« on: November 24, 2003, 07:45:39 pm »
Well, everybody knows there will be fall damage someday, but I want to direct your attention to \"the biger they are, the harder they fall\" thing.

I think chars should have weight based on race and attributes... So when a dwarf would fall of a roof (s)he\'d get more damaged than a enki.... And kran should be somewhat more resistant to such damage.

The other thing is the Newton\'s law. If you fall on sth you damage it too. So when destroyable objects are done, one should be able to jump/fall on them to destroy them. Maybe even make a tiny hole if you fall in mud...

But the most interesting part is falling on PC\'s and monsters. It would be sooo efective: a merry men kran jumps from a tree on a monster...it\'s like a meteor hit!
But even more, the non-lethal impacts; they\'re so realistic. You jump from a roof on sbd, knocking him on the ground and maybe even disarming him... very rogueish.

What do you think?

This might be fun.

Sure the fall damage should correspond to the characters\' attributes.
As for jumping on someone... That could REALLY be fun, but since we will be able to walk through each other, I don\'t think it\'s possible to implement that. But while we\'re at it, you could as well pick a crate or a barrel or a rock, climb a roof/a tree, wait for the target and toss it on his head. Then simply collect the loot and disappear before he recovers :) Nice alternative to compensate for the lack of PKing :P

Heh, yes, and why not add some mushrooms for extra-effect, that would be really cool.
If you pick them up you\'ll grow bigger and do more damage when you land on your foes, and some flowers, and feathers, and a big, bad dragon named Drowser too! :D

Yeah, there should be cool effects like that, that would add a huge chunk of originality to the game and some funny battle tactics. I imagine a Robin Hood type ambush with Kran Little Jhon\'s jumping on people.  :D

I don\'t think you want to make fall damage too \"earth-like\". People tend to fall down giant cliffs while trying to take pretty screenshots, and while some damage would tell the player not to do it again, killing them outright because they fell 5 metres would be annoying. If the player falls for a second (about 10 metres), they should die, anything under that the game should be fairly forgiving; just take a percentage of their health based on a percentage of a second it took to hit the bottom.

Obviously some areas would kill you right away (such as lava pits, bottomless pits, icy torrents, etc).

there\'s been (at least one) thread about fall-damage ...i\'m not saying that you should stop this one ...but a quick search and peek could provide you with new ideas ;)

one of the ideas (actually more or less the main idea) was that the damage should depend on the height from which you fall and on the surface you fall (bushes, branches, rock, water ...), along with which creautre you are (remember kran can crumble and klyros are fragile) and how your stats go.

in that thread there\'s also a simple equation on how the damage could be calculated. ...hope i helped a bit :]
