what kind would suit best?
« on: December 04, 2003, 08:53:02 pm »
I was just thinking that its about time my computer underwent a graphical update (i can only play plane shift in safe (slow) mode which make it lagg uncontrollably, and as im going to be playing planeshift for the next several years or more, i was wondereing if someone could tell me the best kind of graphics card and accelerator to buy so that planeshift runs as efficiently as possible.  ?(

GeForce cards work good....unless you get the new ones...and you need lots of RAM. I\'d also recommend an AMD Athlon, since they\'re so much faster than Pentiums, but that would cost a bit...

My AMD Athlon has a pipeline speed of 333mhz, whereas my brother\'s P3 only has 100mhz pipeline, making his games go about 3X slower...

Newest Athlon has 1.6ghz pipeline, while newest pentium has 800mhz pipeline. Pentium better for processing, Athlon better for gaming.

Be sure to get atleast a 64mb video card, or newer games will not run.

well, so far i have 511 ram (where the other 1 ram went escapes me) with a 128 bit graphics card yet i dunno which make it is, (obviously a crappy one as my computer cant play latest games) or could it be my accelerator thats the problem? its an appollo 315 graphics accelerator (whos heard of that?  :( )
my pc is kinda messed up. It was (emphasise on was) an athlon AMD 4 prcessor with a speed of 1.8 gugahurtz, but for some apparent reson its reading it at 733 megahurts which bytes big time. Now i know that athlons run at about 200 megahurtz less than what its says on the performance reading, but running at half the speed is just wrong!!! any help with my problem?

also, so a g force 4 is off the list, so what a bout a 3 or 2?

the Geforce 4\'s work fine, as long as you get a geforce 4 >TI< and not a MX, also the AMD\'s and Intel\'s are very close in the performance race ATM, with the 3.2 GHz intel and the 3200+ 64 bit CPU\'s.

Kieba: you have this one: http://www.joytech.com/product/vga_spec/315.htm ?

If so i reccomend downloading the latest drivers here: http://driver3.sis.com/graphic/gpu/315/R35302.exe

the AMD Athlon XP 1800+ should operate at 1.53 GHz, if you think you\'re operating at less, check the FSB in the bios, and make sure it\'s at 133 MHz

EDIT: also, you get more bang for your buck with AMD (i have NO idea where you snapped up that intel was cheaper than AMD...)

PS hates radeons.

GhostKuja: I\'ve tried Pentiums and AMD\'s, and the AMD\'s are faster than the Pentiums for playing games, probably due to their pipelines being about twice as fast.

I read somewhere though that the newest AMD processor is actually 1ghz slower than the newest Pentium.

Pentium: 3.2ghz, 800mhz FSB
AMD: Dual 2.2ghz processor, 1600mhz FSB

But who knows, that\'s just processor specs, maybe AMD really is ripping all the gamers off with amazingly high framerates...

Edit: I wish I could afford a new AMD. Mine is almost 4 years old.

thanx rulzern, you sure do rulzern

who ever said amd\'s were bought buy people who dont wanna pay out for expensive intels were mistaken. Amds are great pieces of technology and tbh are used by more serious gamers. They are very reliable, but its true that the latest pentium has a faster speed but its a lot more expensive and not really worth all that money unless you smell and like to watch people ride donkeys playing basketball....

but who cares, a processor is a processor, as long as i can play planeshift im happy.

Edited: Yup, Rulzern is right. It\'s just a plain drivers file. It\'s not his fault if you didn\'t read his post carefully enough and downloaded the file when it did not apply to you. :P

it\'s the latest driver for the card i posted, if you have a different card, you have to use a different driver.

Note the \"?\" and \"if so\" ;)

EDIT: also, to remove it, get out your win98/95/me/2k/xp CD, go to my computer, hardware mamager (something like that) find the device, go to properties, reinstall driver, and find a generic VESA driver on the CD (should be avaliable if you search for driver or choose driver from list)

EDIT: also, try these two:
http://driver3.sis.com/graphic/gpu/315/R351a.exe
http://driver3.sis.com/graphic/gpu/315/315v30755.exe

these files are from the official SiS driver page, so there shouldn\'t be any viruses on them.

1) i have the apollo 315 box right here, 3d thrills and all that, its all the same as rulzern said.
2) i aint trusting my computer with people like rulzern if he posts dodgy links.
3) that file he posted uninstalled my SiS dll file which effectively uninstalled the whole of my Accelerator software which caused it to become messed up!!
lucky for me i found the vga software in my pile of disks.

somewhere on your box there should be an URL about where you can download new drivers, i suggest going there and look, if not try the 2 other links i posted, i had a quite substancial performance boost when installing new drivers on my parent\'s computer (30-40% SIS 315 card), SiS have however changed their naming/driver versions, so there are 4 drivers listed for the 315, 1 is for NT only, so i ruled that out, the other 3 driver links i have pasted.

if you know how to reinstall the old graphics drivers, it shouldn\'t be any problem at all, just trial and error, testing 2 graphics drivers and installing the old ones shouldn\'t take more than an hour at most.

EDIT:

If you think the SiS homepage is a dodgy place for SiS drivers, i\'m not quite sure where you should get them.
