Battlestar Galactica's Revenge
« on: December 09, 2003, 08:37:47 pm »
I wonder, did anyone actually watch the first episode of the 2003 Battlestar Galactica miniseries last night (Reruns at ~6:00 PM EST tonight) or does anyone remember the old 1970\'s one?

Just wondering what people other than me thought about the changes they made to that fine ol\' sci-fi series.  Personally, I\'m outraged.
They completely ruined Apollo, now he\'s some stuck-up guy that likes no-one and no-one likes (I mean, Commander Adama and Starbuck are his enemies, that\'s just not right...).
Starbuck and Boomer are women now; what\'s up with that?
Cylons were created by humans?  And they even look and act like humans? Bah! Although the newest Cylon Centurion (I suppose that\'s what you\'d call it) model looks pretty good...
Not to mention the crazy Cylon spaceships that are in fact, Cylons themselves, that shoot the crazy, obviously Macross-inspired missiles.

Looks beautiful though...

So... What do you people think about it?  You\'re obviously all geeks, you\'re playing a pre-alpha MMORPG tech demo, after all, so don\'t act like you don\'t care. ;)

Its a great series, I definatly reccommend watching it.  Sci-Fi has been rerunning it like crazy in the past few months during the 11AM-4PM EST weekday marathon block, so if you\'re lucky (or just have TiVo) you could catch it from the start (I think they\'ve already gone through the whole thing 3 or 4 times since summer).  Its easily one of the best sci-fi series to ever air (In my opinion third only to Farscape and Firefly).

On its own, the miniseries is quite good; I may just be some sort of *shudder* fanboy...

They cancelled Firefly didn\'t they?  It was nifty the few times I saw it, but I can\'t keep a schedule with a TV show that is only on once a week.  I saw they released a DVD of all the episodes though, but I guess that\'ll be the only one.

I don\'t watch Sci-Fi channel though, two channels is enough for me.
Ninjas have feelings too.  Mostly they feel like dancing.

Sadly, yes.  Although there is a Firefly movie coming out next year, though...  That DVD boxset is about $40-$50, not bad considering what a massively great series it was (it also includes 2 episodes never aired).  Stupid Fox, cancel Futurama then cancel Firefly; bah!

I watched Firefly. It was realistic with the no sound in space thing....neat.

I also watched Farscape on TnVI, but it\'s been repeating for almost a year now...Ahh, I hope Starhunter doesn\'t suffer the same fate.

Grakrim,

I had been reading much of the information on the new miniseries on scifi.com, and I found a lot of it very interesting.  They mentioned many of the changes they were making to the mini-series, just so they could try something new with it.

And then there was the metion of people like you.  Those die-hard fans who are causing all this commotion because the remake is (*gasp* 8o ) different from the original.  The people who say that the original was perfect and that all these people have done is ruin everything about that show.

What I say to you is: \"so don\'t watch it.\"  If you can\'t stand the directors putting a different twist on the story, then go back and watch the re-runs of the original show.  Yes, I\'ve seen episodes of it, and indeed it is an excellent show.  But if you can\'t stand to watch the remake because Starbuck is a woman, and the Cylons were created by man, then don\'t watch it; no one is forcing you to.

That\'s all I have to say (other than I think the remake is actually quite good).

the ending to farscape was truly EVIL, and i\'m still pissed off about it.  great show though, and firefly, SWEET!  why oh why must the networks cancel the good stuff?  who wants to watch \"World\'s most painful nutsackings XXVII\"?

Yes, the remake is quite good, just not true to the original in any way (other than the fact that there are Cylons and characters that resemble the old ones).  I\'m not adverse to change, but when you choose to update or continue something, you must take great care.  The story for the original series was very simple, and I would have been annoyed if they didn\'t update it.  It wasn\'t by any means perfect.  In fact, I appluade the work of the mech designers in the new miniseries, they did a fantastic job in updating the retro-styled ships and Cylons.  The camerawork is breathtaking, and adds that sense of frantic drama that you might expect in such a story, and that the original was lacking.  The CG is perfect; yes, the remake is great.

But its a reckless remake.  Imagine, if you will, I\'m doing a remake of Star Wars.  \"Well, does Luke really have to be human? Let\'s make him a Wookie.  C-3PO really has that Battle Droid feel to him, don\'t you think?  And all this Jedi crap will never fly in today\'s world, so let\'s replace lightsabers with lightwhips; oh, and that gives me a great idea, let\'s dress Luke up like Indiana Jones!\".  By swaping things out just to make a series feel \"fresh\" and \"new\" its completely betrayed the original series that\'s its based on in the first place.  So the shell of \"Battlestar Galactica\" may very well be there only as a licensing gimmick, to make a story appeal to a wider audience; which is also a common trick in video games, but that\'s differant topic entirely.

Unfortunantly that is true with everything that is remade.  All these movies coming out recently that are based off of Tv shows, books, comics, etc.  have done the same thing.  If they don\'t sell it to the mainstream audience it won\'t sell at all.  Just making it for die-hard fans won\'t make them enough money.  It\'s sucks but it\'s nessecary.

I hate it that I always miss the shows I really want to see. I loved Farscape and I still haven\'t seen the last episode, never saw the final episode of Highlander either. The original Battlestar was great but again because of work schedules I have missed the mini series. Hopefully I will catch it on a holiday and SciFi decides to do a marathon and play the whole thing.

Yeah, those kind of endings really suck.

Kinda like this book I had to read for an English class: the author wrote it like \"here\'s what\'s true, and here\'s one way it could have ended, and here\'s another, and here\'s another, but it\'s up to you to decide which ending you think really happened.\"  I was so disappointed that I read that whole book and never knew what actually happened.
