Semi, I\'ve read it sometime ago in a magazine, even scanned it, but couldn\'t find the pic, so i googled away and joined some of the versions.

(a little late but...)
Personally I like Win98,  I have it on one computer.
I extremely hate WinME, it crashes about every 25-30 minutes, literally.
WinXP is ok, especially since I have some computer illiterate persons in my family. :(

As a wintendo i suggest win2k or winxp (who cares if it\'s annoying to use, it\'s a wintendo...)

Dosbox works very well with most DOS games, as long as they aren\'t too recent (protected-mode...)

Wine is free, as is winex as long as you build from CVS. Wine works on adding general support of the win32 API (moreso than winex at any rate), while WineX focuses on getting applications and games to work (by being a paying customer you gain the right to vote on which games to be worked on, and the right to make votes on the same subject (along with support, extra functionality ++ ) )

If you would supply a full list of games that you wish to run, it would be easier to make a educated reccomendation.
Thanks a lot Venge...

yea, wintendo installs are bound to be unstable :/

for games only i think an XP would be ok.
but follow some simple rules:
- do not try to tweak the appearence or anything else to please you ...the bugger will die (did on me, when i still used win)
- for every game follow these steps:
   1) check if there\'s a linux port or if it is even native
   2) check if it works with any of the emulators or game engines.
   3) if the two above fail, boot into wintendo

when it comes to winxp against linux emulators i\'d give the point to the emulators ...especially when it comes to old games.
some fine examples of emulatators and engines:
- quake, wolf and doom (and other ID) engines
- scummvm and  freesci (for old adventure games)
- exult (for ultima VII)
- dosbox (for other dos games)
- winex (for win* games, works great ...but at a monthly fee ...you can get it quite legally even without paying since its GPL, but shush)
- wine (for win* apps and games)

- zsnes (snes emulator)
- epsxe (PS emulator)

What you people keep overlooking is that WINE isn\'t an emulator (Hence the name WINE Is Not an Emulator).  WINE performace is very high when compared to true emulators.  WINE basically just implements the DOS, Win16, and Win32 APIs so programs can run even in the absense of a Windoze OS.  There\'s also a WINE library that allows you to run Win* API programs without the WINE runtime, but, of course, you need the program\'s source for that.

i\'ve heard people saying some proggies and games even run faster through wine(x) then natively ...mostly because there is less bloat.

and this is not a joke or just rumour!

True (for some games, not all, true for me  in HL, GTA 3, GTA 3 vice city and a few others, don\'t play a lot of games on my linux, hehe)

False, win xp and 2k are pretty stable as long as you only install the essentials, win 98 SE needs quite a bit of tweaking to become stable.
Thanks a lot Venge...

Well if liero doesn\'t work...then I\'m sticking to win98

Actually, what you could try is NiL : http://nil.sourceforge.net/
It\'s a Linux Clone of Leiro. You might be able to find clones of some of the other dos games you play too if you look hard enough.

Thanks! I completely forgot about NiL. But I need an easygoing game for win$, that\'s why I was asking about Liero.

Hey, just to let you know, I\'ve gotten Liero working in Win XP. A bit extreme, but here\'s how:
1. Boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt: Restart, then begin tapping F8 as soon as the BIOS is loaded. Select \"Safe mode with command prompt\" from the menu.
2. You\'ll see a dos command line, navigate to Liero and run it.
3. Enjoy.
