Licenses to Kill
« on: January 03, 2004, 10:20:51 pm »
I was thinking about the weapons that may be available to us and was thinking: \"What if a strong character gives a newb a strong weapon? Then the newb would be unstopable without doing any work (which isn\'t fair)!  So I came up with licenses! :) I think the only way to use certain weapons should be if you got a license for that level weapon! Maybe there could be a npc who gives out licenses to those that complete certain missions! (Ex.- You want a mid-level weapon so you go to the license npc! The npc says to get the mid-level weapon license you must go out and kill a *border-line mid-level monster*! Upon killing that monster you go back to the npc to attain the license allowing you to buy mid-level weapons. I encourage everyone to state an opinion! ;)

nah, too much effort. U should have summin simple like having item levels.
E.g:

Bow of Uberness requires 50 dexterity, and 60 ranged weapon skill to use.

To make this more realistic you could add in this License system, so once you reach this lvl of skill and Dex, you can go and get a license to use all items requiring this level. This would show that you are properly qualified to use/buy such a weapon. This wouldn\'t stop you from finding/stealing one and carrying/selling it though. You just can\'t use it.

Yeah that\'s why we will have weapon skill levels.  However I don\'t think there should be outright minimums, that once you meet them you can use the weapon fine.  You should simply need to meet a certain level of proficiency to use a weapon effectively.  Using weapons with a lower than recommended level decreases their effectiveness and may even make them a hazard to the user.  If you are well over the proficiency level though, you can get a bonus in using that weapon.

Even if a low-skill characted have a really powerful weapon it doesn\'t really give much advantage to him...although he might do good damage...he/she might be...afraid of losing item when dying...or being pk\'ed \'cos of it...same thing happened to me when playing Tibia...i juts aquired really powerful weapon...but i nearly never used it \'cos of fear of being killed and losing the item.

You can try, but you shall fail! Seek us not, we shall find you.

Dont make stupid posts... PS will be non-PK.
Newbies just shouldnt be able to use the weapons or make uber weapons so crappy for newbies that they\'d rather use the newbie weapons. But if you do that, why not just put in a limit?
I\'m fine with a certain number of skill points required for a certain weapon.

I think it would be fairer to give the character a malus when he\'s trying to use a weapon for which he doesn\'t have all the requirements yet. Of course this malus would be proportionnal to the difference between actual character\'s skill level and required skill level. Maybe some weapons would still need a special training before you can do anything but dodge with them though.

if ur gonna add reqs to weapons it should be skill level, cause say i wanted to be more like a battle mage, i\'d have to train in strength, intelligence and/or wisdom, and maybe in endurance too so that way ive got the health and all, and all that is already alot of points depending on how many u get a level or whatever

roguewolftamer, stop making nonsense posts. If you want to post, make sure you know what you\'re talking about first.
PS will NOT have a level-based system. So it\'s only logicals that there will be non character level based requirements.
There is also a difference between skills and character attributes. Strength, intelligence and wisdom would be character attributes. Skills are things like sword skill, blunt weapon skill, azure magic skill, crafting skill.
Ofcourse there should be skill requirements, but IMO some attribute requirements would be good too. It is only logical that you need to be strong (high str) to use/lift a big warhammer or waraxe.

Hey i\'m back, anyway im with skizzik on this one about the strength factor to use hvy weapons and such and I like wedges idea of the strength of the weapons attack/defence depending on the character, it\'s only logical that a ten foot rock dude with uberstrength would use a warhammer better than a human with barely any strength.  The licensing idea is cool too, like in Grand Turismo games, I think its GT.  Any you could use licensing to be able to use weapons of any sort, ppl wont sell u a broadsword if you can\'t use it, they don\'t want any blood on their floor.  There everyone is happy, give me money.

Wait why have cheesy liscenses or the whole mmorpg generic way of doing it and having a certain level of skills to use an object. Its so overdone! Why dont we make it you can  wield and use any weapon but there is a good chance if your skill in that area isnt very proficient that you have a chance of hurting your self maybe even mortally with it. It happens in real life all the time. Little Timmy wants to be a samuri and cuts his hand off with a katana his idiot of a dad keeps in the closet. This would be so much better than the whole leveling idea that has been used 3000 times. Id love to see a noob chop his own head of with a haliberd.... :D

Yeah, i like this idea a lot better than having licenses or just being unable to use it, it\'s a lot more realistic and it also adds some fun to the game.(I would love to see a n00b kill himself with some uber weapon ^^)

yea, risk to lose thy rare weapon, since the newbie might know that it can kill him/her... but hey... you can get in return stuff of ones that didn\'t know... I\'m sure newbies are so rich that it\'ll be worth it ;)

I like the idea of being able to use any weapon at any level , but like you said if a person with 12 stregth try to use a huge axe all he can do is drag it along behind him. and say a person with horrable dexterity trys to swing it, i would love the animation of watching him swing it, spin compleatly in a circle and fall  on his back while it lands on top of him.
