Does PS interfer with p2p and online messengers ?
« on: January 08, 2004, 11:06:54 am »
Hi dudes,

I installed PlaneShift yesterday and went for a walk. How nice !
I have lots of questions but i understand i am supposed to be somewhat litterate before doing so (player guide, here i come).

I experienced some trouble this morning with Skype and go.icq

I was playing and someone rang me thru Skype, it ended up in a mess.

I closed the game and realized that Skype wouldn\'t work properly (connection failure), even if fully uninstalled and reinstalled, and that i could not connect thru go.icq (while icq itself works properly).

Does Planeshift use specific settings for its communication or should i just forget all about those messengers and keep playin\'

Thx

PS : hey administrator, no need to be rude with titles, yes i am a newbie ;)

*Doesn\'t see anything wrong with our titles*

Hiya, welcome to PlaneShift. :)

I really don\'t know anything about those messengers you mentioned (apart from ICQ... *shudder* nasty thing). I myself don\'t have any problems running other messenger programs alongside the game. MSN, AIM and Yahoo all seem to be fine with it, aswell as other Internet apps like browsers.

Are you sure the PS client caused the problems you experienced with Skype, seeing as the program was still messed up after you had closed the game?

While I haven\'t used the programs that you\'ve mentioned, I know that Planeshift does work while running other programs, such as messengers and p2p progs.  I\'ve run the game with MSN messenger (not a great prog i know :P ) Bittorrent, Winamp, the Internet Explorer downloader, even tried Adobe Photoshop once (computer wasn\'t too happy, but it worked :D) so I don\'t see why the programs you were running would have been affected.

Generally speaking, its a good idea not to run Planeshift with too many other programs (as few as possible) as it chews up memory pretty good in its current version.

ive run PS alongside with taskman and found that it doesnt so much use up memory, at least with my comp, as it keeps really close to the 433MB mark with very little deviation.  it does on the other hand take up all of my poor processors time, which is running at 805mhz.

Well ... who knows indeed.

Planeshift is the only soft I installed that day. Before my messengers worked and after not ... I should try to uninstall Planeshift and see what happens but i don\'t feel like at the time being ;)

Well, it ended up to be a problem related to Skype\'s key in the registry. This problem has been adressed in their forum yesterday.

It all right folks ;)
