Hiya all,

Today my new system finally arrived. It\'s pretty dam good for the price we paid (a little under ?1.3k).

My plan was to insert the harddrive from my old computer into this new one, and directly copy all my most important files over. However, this has a warranty tag fixed to the case which will invalidate our guarantee if we break it off... so basically, I\'m just going to have to buy a bunch of writable CDs and do it the hard way.

This means I may not be back to full speed for a week, at most, because I don\'t have any CDs left. Also my CD burner on the old comp sucks, so I may have to try several times before I get clean data on it. So please excuse my absence or lack of activity untill that time, and I\'ll try to get back as soon as I can. :)

Well i got another idea for you.
Maybe you should invest in an external hd case for usb or firewire or even both. That would cost you about 30?, whatever that might be in pounds.

Another idea would be, to bring the entire pc to your dealer and let him insert the hd.

Anyways what are the specs of your new machine?


p.s.: Silly idea to seal a pc. I would expect a little more service after having payed 1.3k.

My PC had the same seal but when i received it, i saw he has received a shock and the seal was broken (and the inside also :( ). Fortunately, the warranty had applied without difficulty

That\'s a good idea Morgy, but I don\'t have the money to buy an external HD. I can get a pack of about 10 CDs in Poundland... ?1 each. :D Far cheaper option, and as long as I burn on the slowest speed available, they shouldn\'t corrupt too much.

As for my new specs:

Fujitsu-Siemens
2.8GHz AMD Althon 3000+
1024mb DDR RAM
150GB HDD
GeForce4 FX 5200 (256mb)

I also got a 17\" TFT! :D

I getting an Athlon 64 3400+ with 1.5gb DDR ram in a month. :D I upgrading my old one, so It\'ll only cost about ?600.

Oh, if u want, I can take over u\'r modding duties for however long u\'r gone. :p :D

Oh, and another idea. Make a Lan using your parallel ports, or u\'r ethernet ports, and transfer the data across like that.

I got a new comp in September but the only things about it that excited me were the 17\" flat screen and the wireless trackball mouse.   :]

My dream comp is something like $3,000 but I may just keep upgrading this comp little by little.

You dont need to buy a hd, but only the case. The good thing about that would be, that you could carry your files around for example trade some mp3z (yeah thats kind of legal where i come from, at least it isnt illegal, if you bought the original cd and if it had no copy protection) or other stuff. Back your system up on a regular basis.....

Did you get a decent dvd drive with the pc?

I really wonder how siemens can sell a pc like that without a good dvd +- r, +-rw drive, especially since it seems that you mustnt open it.

You better go ask your dealer about this warranty thing!!

@elscouta: Poor you, scouty. How long did it take until you got a new one?

I was going to give you the same advice as Xordan ... if you arent a dialup user you probably got an ethernet card in both pcs ... thus with buying an un-twisted pair cable (dont know if you call it that way) you could have your data over in no time (from 1,25MB up to 12,5MB transfer per sec depending on cards)

if I were you I would check whether a seal like that is even permitted (in conjunction with warranty).
Where I come from a few companies tried that little trick too although this policy was in violation of the law...
So as owner of the PC you were allowed to open it (I think the reason was that it is a modular device and you have the right to extend its possibilities by adding modules) without losing the warranty!

That might be both cheaper & faster, AND it could be important knowledge if you ever want to change something in your computer. :)

hmmm... my computers tend not to be sealed for long ...if i\'ll buy a more trustworthy blend next time (e.g. HP Compaq or IBM) which would give me let\'s say 3 years next-day (or even same-day!!) i-come-over-and-fix-your-pc-for-free-and-am-an-allround-nice-bugger guarantee and there\'s enough documentation with the PC (especially HW manuals) ...then, only then, i might leave the seal there untill the end of the guarantee.

moogie ...do both PCs have a network/ethernet card? ...if so, why don\'t you just buy a cross-over patch cable (just a ? or two) and connect the two buggers with it and thus make a network? ...then you just copy-paste from one to the other one with lightning-fast speed and don\'t need to burn CDs all day long :]

Lots of things to reply to...

Okay, firstly, the warranty does not permit any service or modifications on the PC not done by a Fujistu Siemens technician. So I guess the seal is to prevent unauthorised \'tampering\'... this includes upgrades of any kind. I might call them to make sure about all this, because the warranty itself doesn\'t actually mention the tag anywhere, however, the tag has \"warranty seal\" written on it.

The PC has a DVD RW drive, but I don\'t know it\'s specs. I\'ll have a look when I get home.

As for trying to make a network connection between the two PCs, I think a friend of mine might have a cable I can borrow...

That\'s a no then. :P Nevermind. I actually found one of my rewritable CDs yesterday and was able to copy a good deal of my data over. Now that I have that, I won\'t need to buy a tonne of CDRs. :) Looks like things are going well now.
