Question about Crystal Blue
« on: January 17, 2004, 02:59:23 am »
I don\'t know if this has been asked before, if so, forgive me. When CB is released, will we have to redownload PS, or will we get it through the updater?

Looks like a full redownload I\'m afraid. Supposed to be something new with Crystal Space, the engine they\'re using, so it\'s not so easy to update such a complicated thing! So if you\'re a 56k-er I would probably not bother to download MB, unless you\'re not paying the phone bill :D, and wait until CB.

downloading mb was hard for me and i have a dsl line. took me all friggin night. not to mention the fact that about 10,000 people are going to try to download it at the same time when it comes out. CB is going to eat that server UP!

Better then trying to download it at home with a cable modem.

eh, yeah, hopefully I\'m around at first...I don\'t love thinking about downloading it along with nearly everyone else...then again, it will go faster then when I downloaded MB at least.  8)

A good idea would have many servers to download from, or maybe when some one finnally gets it, they can post it on there server, with the permision of the PS crew of course.  :]

the ps community is a prety friendly one so im pretty sure anyone graced with access to a good server will post crystal blue there for sharing purposes. but then again you never know someone might take opportunity and spread an infected version of it and get a nasty virus spread about but im really not too worried about that happening...

EDIT: wee 400th post... hehe im happy!

Q: How many Planeshifters does it take to expalin a simple concept to a newb?
A: Six. Five to argue on who\'s explanation is right, and Moogie to lock the thread.

The distribution of PlaneShift through the SourceForge mirrors seems very efficient IMO. SourceForge has a tremendous amount of resources. On our part we\'ll probably put up the download on 2 of our web servers. Although we\'re expecting a lot more traffic for CB I\'ve never doubted the ability of the PlaneShift servers (development and live) scattered across the Internet.

I dont know, it was just a suggestion. I didnt want to offened the server owner. Its just that if would get to busy and all downloads go like 10kbs it would be a good idea to have others. But I dont know how good the server is, so....

bittorrent

I suspect that appropriate use of bittorrent could help.  its a great technology for times when a lot of people want to download something all at the same time.  And besides... those SF.net servers can really dish it out.
