Server cost
« on: January 18, 2004, 06:25:01 pm »
These may be a stupid questions but I did not find answers to them in the FAQ and a quick search in the forums.

Will it be possible for anyone to run a PS server?
If so, will there be enough players on some to make playing PS fun?
And how will the server providers compensate the cost involved in hosting servers with lots of players using a lot of bandwidth 24/7?
Will the Planeshift team continue to run a server after a beta?
Is there a way to give small monetary donations to the Planeshift team?

1.Will it be possible for anyone to run a PS server?
:O PS servers must be approved by the Devs.

2.If so, will there be enough players on some to make playing PS fun?
See answer one.

3.And how will the server providers compensate the cost involved in hosting servers with lots of players using a lot of bandwidth 24/7?
They\'re donating bandwidth, so this is their issue.

4.Will the Planeshift team continue to run a server after a beta?
Of course.

5.Is there a way to give small monetary donations to the Planeshift team?
Yes, I dunno how though.

The key to manipulative bargaining is to ask for something twice as big as what you want, then smile and nod when you are talked down to your original wish. You are still young, my apprentice, and have much to learn in the ways of the force. -UtM

Official servers have to be approved, otherwise have fun....as far as donations, there really isn\'t anyway to donate to them since their not a real company, and from when others have asked they don\'t expect them right now anyways...at least that\'s the PS dev team, I don\'t know about fragnetics (server people) or others.

Yes, there are 3 ways:

1) With permission from the Devs

2) Without the art. (Or u can make your own)

3) The whole game, with the art, without the permission, illegally.

You can download the server from the public CVS.

The unanimous view on our side (Fragnetics) is that it won\'t be right to collect any donations given that PlaneShift is a huge project being worked on by a number of people for free. There are other server providers who contribute to PlaneShift as well - this forum being one of them. An effort to collect donations would need to be started from the top (devs) IMHO.

However, we wouldn\'t mind it if you guys shipped over additional servers.  :D

So this is what Fragnetics calls a \"small donation\"? ;)

Thanks everybody for your helpful answers.

Does the PS license allow the to charge players for playing? Or to plant an advertizing bot into the chat system?
