Sheaths/Scabbards
« on: January 19, 2004, 08:37:45 pm »
I mentioned this on the Elder Scrolls forums before, I think.  It would be great if characters could purchase/make scabbards (\"holders\") for their swords to wear on their waist.  This would encourage people not to run around everywhere with their swords drawn.

Elaborating a little, what if you could enchant the scabbard so that if your sword is in it, it gains charges that could, say, inflict fire damage?

Say you were in a dungeon, and fought off a couple of monsters.  One of them leaves behind an enchanted scabbard, so you put it on a sheath your sword for a while.  When you encounter more enemies later (maybe ten minutes?)  your sword could have 5 or 6 charges of fire damage.

If I\'m not being clear, let me know...but I thought it was a pretty cool idea.

having them enchanted is a little odd but the idea of actually being able to sheath your sword would be pretty cool. i mean do police officers walk around with their guns out all the time? no way. actually seeing the sword and it not dissapearing into whereever you put it is totally wierd and i wonder why it hasnt been dont more than it has. having it charge your weapon is a good idea but not a completely beleivable one but then again were in ylakium not earth so anything can happen i guess..

I like the idea of having sheats, that would be a lot better then just putting weapons in your \"inventory\". you shouldn\'t be able to cary more then 3 maybe 4 swords with you anyway(IMHO), so you might as well put them in a sheat.

the scabbard of the legendary sword Excalibur made you invincible, so I don\'t think it\'s odd in any fantasy related way :P

The great thing is that it makes you not-hostile looking. NPCs could(should) react differently if u\'re sticking a claymore at them.

In Morrowind, NPCs have a -5 modifier on their disposition if you talk to them with your weapon drawn.  They don\'t like a sword sticking in their face while trying to have a conversation.

lol...I didn\'t know about that...that\'s kinda funny.  I guess they\'re too spellbound by its greatness.

Or they just afraid of being killed by it ;) :D

But  , this game is NOT Morrowind .

However it\'s a greate idea to sheath your weapons . They can give you some protecive auras or increase your moral .

i agree with that. This is a neat idea, and these sheats could be used as items just as rings or pendants; sometimes they give a xtra bonus like higher attr points or some more mana/hp

How about, If you need to have a acabbard specially made for your sword(a two-handed sword certainly won\'t fit in the scabbard for a short sword)  In order for you to get a scabbard, you need to take your sword to a crafter and have him make you one, and specially design one just for you, where the scabbard will only fit your sword.  this could enable smithers and crafters to make scabbards for swords for selling.  Perhaps they can even be enchanted to increase you hp/mp or attributes.

Good point, perhaps scabbards could fit all swords of that particuler sword class.  That way if you found a better long sword then the one that you were using, you could swap weapons but keep the same scabbard.  This would enable the worthwhile buying and selling of scabbards.

Did you mean moral or morale?
Either/ or works though :)

I like the idea of magical sheaths/ scabbards. But if you could make them, what skill would they come under? Tailoring, blacksmithing, or something else maybe???

And yeah, you\'d have to make them a bit open in the way of usefulness, in that a scabbard can be used for all shortswords (unless uniquely different in appearance) or it would be pointless to put them in. You\'d then need one for every single weapon, like a set or something. That could work though too, coz then you could just enchant the sheath for that particular sword.
