Hey,

i want to help in the PS dev., and how would you think?. I want to translate Planeshift to the spanish. I read the website of the french dude that translated it to french (duh!), i know what i have to translate (files) and how (dont translate wpn, sites, names. just talking).

I need help, because i want to know what programs (mostly free or whatever) i can use to edit the *.dll and *.png extensions.

For the *.png i was thinking in Photoshop, that should do it?. I think i would need the fonts though.
But for *.dll ones i have no idea. Any thoughts will be nice, mostly from the guys behind the proyect.

Waiting for a quick reply,
Bullian

EDIT: Lol...i am thinking...do i have to download the Open Source code right??...hehe

Use Photoshop, PSP or any other image editor to modify .png files, however you wouldn\'t want to modify the .dll\'s. They are, after all, the things that make the game work, and if you have no idea how to modify them, you\'ll surely mess them up if you ever figure it out. :) Learn some C++ and maybe you\'ll be able to modify them one day, but translating the game can be done easily by modifying the .xml and the .png files.

I think there is a spanish and czech translation underway atm. So I\'d ask around who\'s doing it/done it and if  they need help.

Good. In next version of PS, you won\'t need to edit .dll or .png files to translate it. Each language will have all the text in its own XML (text) file. But currently only text stored on the client is possible to translate, text messages coming from server are not - we must change it to use the localization system first. We have somewhat incomplete german and czech translation for the client part now.

There is no point in translating *.png and *.dll. Everything will be in *.xml. Wait until CB comes out.

To actually answer the question though, try changing the file extension to .txt and opening it that way (open it in notepad) this works more often then one might think - HOWEVER it can screw up the file if you do it wrong so you should only try this after you have made a backup copy of the file.

Or redneck.  Redneck \"translations\" are always fun, perhaps once this localization system comes out I\'ll do one (Its already in CB you say? Then I could just check out the CVS and do one now, no?)...

Just a tip for the gibberish translation though, it might be best to hardcode it in, and just make it spit out random characters.  You know, to keep you on your toes. ;)

And SnowWolf, editing a DLL like that is just insane.  Since its open-source, you can just edit the code and resources that make up the DLL and compile it yourself.  But then again, that\'s alot of hassle considering the ease of using a nicely done localization system; thanks devteam!

I wasn\'t refering to dlls in particular. I\'m saying that anytime you want to mess with something you think has text in it, try converting. Say for instance an html or css file.

a dll isnt like a jpeg, you cant just open it up and change this and that unless you can understand billions of lines of 0s and 1s.  the speach shouldnt even be in the dlls anyways unless its hard coded, which would be extreamly foolish for the devs to do
