Which Linux Distro?
« on: January 25, 2004, 11:54:26 pm »
Hey everyone I am currently working on building another box at home and am so sick of Windows I was going to install Linux on it. I have dual booted older systems with Windows and Red Hat before but I was looking into making just a pure Linux box this time. I am building an AMD atholon XP box and was just looking for suggestions on which Linux distro anyone would suggest.
BTW I am probably going to be using this box to do some file serving on my network at home also.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I would suggest Gentoo as it is great for fileserving i think, and ofcourse because it has a simple emerge for PlaneShift :P

I don\'t know much about all the linux distro\'s, there are a lot of great websites about it though, just google for linux distro or something.

You can always settle. Lindows is supposed to work great... the stability of Linux, with the GUI of windows.

Choose Fedora over Red Hat 9. No more account crap to deal with when you use up2date.

Perhaps the two evils (e-machine & windows) somehow null each other\'s power and create a stable system for you :P.  I saw that BSOD so many times with ME *shudder* and earlier that it was just nauseating.

I\'m another gentoo user, but it\'s more or less for power users, if you want something that gets installed in 10 minutes and works out-of-the-box, try a Mandrake (the 10 beta 1 is out i think).

Thanks :D
I have been looking into gentoo alot so far. I am not really worried about ease of install or anything so just because it will install itself in 10 minutes isn\'t a major concern for me more what I am going to get out of the end product.

There\'s nothing wrong with Windows, it\'s just that people always want something to complain about, and since bashing Windows seems to be the hip thing to do.... Seriously, I\'ve never seen a Linux thread anywhere that doesn\'t begin with something like \"I\'m getting tired of Windows\" or \"Windoze is so stoopid.\" I\'ve used Gentoo primarily for the past 2 years but it\'s not because I hate Windows every being and I believe for every copy sold 3 babies die as a direct cause, I just prefer Linux.

It\'s that Windows bashing mentality that people say \"Linux is for people who hate Windows. BSD is for people who love Unix.\"

On the issue of Gentoo installation - if you just follow the install guide it\'s incredibly easy, it just takes forever. That is, unless you start from a stage 3 install, then it takes around 30 minutes.
