Question for the Devs.

Ok, so if i am not mistaking, CB will have 99% of overything the full game will have in terms of direct interaction with the enviornment. And also i have heard the you simplified the coding by alot.

So here is my question:

Once CB comes out, will you be updating small things into the game frequently? Things like new weapons, monsters, magic, maby new animations and sounds, bug fixes, small stuff like that.
Some other MMORPGs that are in development add things like that almost every other day.

So is PS gona do that or will we just have to wait till the release of the version after CB before we get new stuff.

Not sure where you get that number from, there is still a long ways to go yet to be near a full game.  Crystal Blue will just be another big step towards that goal.

I would really like to do that and when we have our round table for the next version I would like to push for this.

if i could code as well as some of you can i would suck up my pride go live with my mother and code for weeks on end. but i cant code, so its too bad

I have another question.

What do you need more support in, coding or art? Like, which one aryou more understaffed in, so it slows down the rest?

as far as I know, they are in need of more 3d art members, the whole world has to be modeled piece by piece, this naturaly takes a lot of time, all models also were completely redone and a lot of monsters had to be modeled, all these models have their own animations so it\'s a LOT of work for the 3d department..

well im wondering which program you guys would like it done in. im sure i could find a tutorial for it. i WANT to help SO bad but i dont know any of the ropes in making anything 3d or animating it. so if you guys want one more person who has 20 hours of free time, then just teach me what program you use. things like what the filenames of the final projects are. where good tutorials are. and most importantly what you want work done it. also what are the types of work like. do you just tell me what you want like lets say... a building, i do a quick little version of it, if you guys like it I do a really good version of it or do you guys just let your artists go hog wild and do a version of what they think it should look like and you guys accept it or dont accept it. i need to know theses things. i never worked on anything with a game so i really dont know what i should be doing.

learning how to make the content is the easy thing i think. i jsut want to know how work is going to be managed. what the liscences EXACTLY mean. how many hours and what kind of work will be expected. if there is a certain style the monsters should have. rules i have to follow. all of these things are the tricky parts imo.

i do have auto cad i think on here. if not im sure i can get it. im lucky enough to have a dad who is an engineer. he gets auto cad free from his work.

Heck I would just like to know what type of programs your using so that I can learn on my own. I have 2 pc\'s so while I am camping the crystals and playing other games on my second pc.. I could be learing to do 3 d models.  I have a friend that has done quite a bit of 3-d modeling.  He has done work on the move (I think this is the name of the movie)Deep Impact the one with the asteriod that impacts in the ocean causing the tidel waves.  that was some of his drawing. and he also has done some anime stuff  Bubble gum crisis.    If you can tell me the name of the programs ... I can harash him days on end to teach me.. after all what are friends for? lol

try 3ds max or Maya.

Maybe there\'s also some blender being used in the dev team, but I doubt it.

This is where acraig and I disagree.  :-)

Other MMORPGs do regular updates, but they do that on games that are already done.  CB is not a complete game, and making 100,000 people update is a big deal.  Turning that into our standard methodology seems like a really big deal.

I think we could move to that system perhaps after the release after CB, but imo not after CB itself.

We\'ll talk it over and reach consensus at some point I am sure.  :-)

I guess it depends on how isolated the tasks will be for the next version ( after CB ).  If it is adding a new monster I am sure we could do that fairly easily.  Similar with adding new functionality.  If the blocks are added/tested easily I don\'t see a problem with doing an update.

The trouble comes when you have many people working at many different tasks.  There is never a point when everything is working since everybody is halfway through a task.

The way around this is to just have a list of 3-4 things to be done and then not do anything else until those are done and in game, but that is very hard to organize becuase if somebody drops the ball on their task everybody else is waiting on it.  

We will figure something out, but I would like to have at least some semi regular updates.

hmm, maybe u could just have monthly updates??
Step 1:

Put all the updated files in a cvs....

Step 2:

Have the updater download and copy/overwrite the files into the planeshift dir...

Do this once a month... If you only download the files which need to be downloaded, it saves time ... and it keeps the game updated.... which keeps people happy. :D

So I side with Acraig.... :D

It\'s not as easy as that. Take this as an example.  We have 4 ( A-D) tasks that we would like to do and then have an update.

A - acraig
B - Vengeance
C - Magodra
D - TomT

So we all start our tasks at around the same time making commits as we go.   Now say B,C,D are done in two weeks but A will take another 2 weeks.  Does the rest of the time sit around waiting for A to be complete or do we have a branch for each task in CVS or do we release with CBD done and a half working, error prone A? Its not easily handled. CVS is a constantly moving target and trying to nail down a release is very hard.  We had 10+ different versions of MB before we tagged the CVS with \'Molecular Blue Version\'


That is why the CB release is taking so long, we have tasks A-Z going on :)
