Legion of the Undead
« on: February 04, 2004, 01:11:08 am »
(WARNING: Long and extremely in-depth post!! But read anyway please :D)

I think it would be really neat if PS had an anti-hero army that players would constantly be in combat with, and what better way to do that than have players on both sides!

I realize that the concept of going to hell and working your way out is already implemented, but I really think it should be more than that. If you die and make it back, players should get the option (or better yet, forced after they die too many times) to become an undead creature. The undead can pvp as though they were creatures, and the same applies to players who see an undead creature, they can just attack it. Also, the undead can only be active in the living plain at night. During the day, they travel as harmless ghosts.

To make things even more tense, the living and the undead cannot communicate to each other.

ZOMBIES will be the starting league for the undead. They have a good toughness but are very slow and stats of your former self influence these set values. (such as if you were a quick theif before, you\'d be fast for a zombie, but still overall slow). The zombies will have it tough on purpose and need a lot more experience than normal in order to improve (ill explain why later). This will cause the undead to attack and maime anything that moves for experience, much like crazed zombies do in real life. Related post on killing: http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=7582&boardid=11&styleid=3&sid=6133bacadfc113812ba961f40a0e106c

Once zombies have become powerful enough, they have the option to proceed and advance in one of two different undead leagues, PLAGUE BEARERS and SKULLS.

-PLAGUE BEARERS are meaner zombies. They hit lighter  and can take more damage, but they can infect others! This would cause the player or creature that was hit to be barely damaged at all during the blow, but instead, the damage speads itself out along the course of time, draining the life. Eventually, the damage would be greater overall. These plagues can be healed easily by healers, that is, if one is around.

OGRES are advanced plague bearers that specialize in poison spells and diseases that they can project in a cloud that can infect more than one target. Ogres also will have the best toughness in the game, able to take just about any blows.

-SKULLS are those skeletons you see in every RPG. The difference between them and zombies is that skulls can equip weapons and light armor. However, they are highly vulnerable to magic, especially healing spells.

UNDEAD NECROMANCERS are advanced skeletons that use the magic of the necromatic dark way. The difference between them and living necromancers are that the undead are far more powerful with their magic and especially in summoning undead npcs. However, they keep the same defenses that a normal skull has.

SHADES are very dark and sinister skulls that obtained an especially evil reputation by doing equal deeds, (Such as a lot of player killing). Shades are cloaked skulls that can travel as shadows and inside others. Thus, making shades the ultimate assassins, but they only work for themselves. Shades can only advance if they kill personal vendettas, such as someone who beat you in a duel a long time ago, or people that used to be in your ignore list. ;) (Imagine being in some dark alley, when suddenly a shadow moves across the floor, signaling that a shade is nearby. Indeed, it is one, but he is not after you, but with someone you travel with. Creepy huh?) Shades can only be killed by spells and serve unknowingly to the grand shade himself, the Grim Reaper. (maybe)

And now the good part

-SPAWNS are those who made an enormous accomplishment as an ogre, undead necromancer, or shade that has brought them back to the living. Not only have you returned as your old character, but you keep some of the abilities you used to have during your dead life! Such as shade spawns can still travel in shadows, or ogre spawns have an incredible resistance to everything, or undead necromancer spawns have an awesome advantage in their magical abilities!

I dont have any idea how to handle the death of an undead creature, but maybe it would be a good idea to switch between the dead and the living every time you die.

And I think that concludes my long wish. Its extreme, but I still think its a good concept.
Beware that I am distorted in my wording if you do not understand me at all.

so your saying that if you die you become the undead,  so how does the undead armor themselves do they have undead smiths and stuff? or would they just have to defened themselves naturally? also if they were undead couldnt they take controll of like wolves or monsters and use those bodys to kill people with? it sounds like an intreasting idea but instead of being forced to why not be able to pick when you die living or dead most may chose living but hey dead would be fun 2.

I think a skeleton\'s main source of armor and weapons would be loot they find, or maybe they can wear the armor they died in. And for them to control creatures, they would need to be associated with the brown way, and undead creatures are animated and controlled by the dark way, breathing on it, so I dont think that would be possible.

I like your idea of choosing which plain to live in every time you die though.

extream indeed ,but not a bad idea.

I don\'t think there should be a choice in it though. but if that was the case it would have to be alot easier to get back your living body.

like say you had to kill 1 random person to get to come back from the dead. if you had to kill say 2 people though ,they would have to kill 2 people a peice which means every one would be dead eventually.
which wouldn\'t work

so you only have to kill 1. but i do like your idea of undead advancement . so every 2 or 3 times you died you would become more powerful.

just a thought though

If you mix the choice and no choice ideas it\'s really cool - have what you come back as depend on how you come back, how powerful you were in life, and what you do in the afterlife.

There are a lot of good threads on this - here are two.

Its a really good idea, but I think not everyone wants to become an undead. Not me for one!
I dont like the whole idea of being undead, coz thats evil dude. But Im sure there are ppl who wish the choose of becoming an undead after death

I think your idea is fascinating, but there are the few catches I find...

Undead are overused, like Dragons. There will be no PvP of any sort, or at least as long as your idea is not implemented. How does one re-enter their guild once they die, or are they simply kicked out? The main negative point is the fact that Undead are simply used far too often.

Perhaps something similar to the Undead, but different enough that you cannot see a huge similarity, could be used. This would require thinking up an entirely new race, though, and that would be... difficult.

To Wormtail:

Hmm, I dont know what else to use but the overused undead creatures. Maybe instead of dead creatures, a plague will infect players, turning them into insane zombie like creatures called Hoars (not whores). Instead of having flesh decay off their bodies, they will have a constant build up of tissue, worts, hair, fungus, and tumors, turning them into rather large creatures.

Just a stupid idea off the top of my head. Oo

I like the idea of an undead army, or something like it, but i would add a few changes. I especially like the idea of a whole \'hidden\' civilization of undead players.

First of all, people would be able to choose if they incarnate into an undead creature or back to a living person after they die. That way people who don\'t like to be undead, will never be undead, people who like to play the dark side can.

Second, undead persons cant die of physical damage,a huge advantage. Other advantages and disadvantages of the undead i assume the same as in the first post. I

Undeads can return to the living by completing some quest, so nobody will get stuck being undead.

Just my vision on an undead legion

yeah I totely agree with billysecond,
the whole idea was great but with the changes of billysecond it is complete in my opinion. but a hidden civilization of undead would be a bit extreme and very much work for the devs.
remember that they are doing this in their spare time.
it would also be better as you complete the quest you can chose of becoming living again or evolve into one of the creatures of the first post. and then you gain a new quest. they will gain armor by looting/stealing.

the shades are maybe a bit extreme?!

read. I even agreed on it the first time.

I know this is a complex concept, but if it gets too complicated or time-consuming for the devs if they choose to do this, they can always start looking for more people to help, thats good news for whemyfeild. :D

Hm...i think it should be possible to become undead...like a mage can perform a rutual to become a Lich...or other character can become a Vampire...but that should be very hard and have quite a number of disadvantages...like in towns you have to walk cloaked...and if not city guard attack you...well for good cities that is...

I think it\'s marvelous idea. But, since all the disadvantages there should be two skills the undead should know.  Life drain and mind control.  How do you like it. :)
