playing with headphone's
« on: February 16, 2004, 06:06:34 pm »
well i went thru the search engine and couldn\'t find if this topic came up if it did i apoligize i also don\'t know alot about this as i have not played any game\'s where you can actually talk to the people you are playing with but it would be kinda cool to put a vioce to the face of the people you meet and i would very much like the input of people who have played any game\'s that you can verbally chat to your friend\'s  :)

*stares in amazement at largest run on sentence in the world* Well for one there are lots of systems for gaming that let you use headphones. problem is they are mainly used for fps, and rts. Not mmorpgs. Now if we could encourage more users of planeshift to use these programs and buy headphones it would be a great experience. how ever some of the people who play cannot use headphones because their connections suck and it would lag the hell out of thier comp. but there are alot of us on broadband so whenever the game comes out it would be nice if we all used headphones. But agreeing on a single program would be hard. there are lots out there to use. Im pretty sure it would be hard to agree on one. And having one laced in with planeshift wouldnt be a good idea because of course the 56kers would get lag out the tail end. So when cb finally comes out i say we all agree on a good progy and talk.

This has been discussed before - I *disagree*, since the real voices can break character (especially in the case of a male playing a female or vice versa)

That doesn\'t stop anyone from setting up a system with a few friends, it just circumvents the boundaries of the game.

Like dfryer said, the reason why there are no real voices in MMORPG is because you\'re supposed to be roleplaying someone else, not yourself. So your own voice coming out of the mouth of a kran or something would kinda break this whole roleplaying thing(not to mention it would sound really weird :P).

Another problem would be that it would be used only when talking privately to people.  If you could hear everyone\'s voice around you, it would become too confusing to make out what is being said.

Hmm, Voice over IP?

PlaneShift uses less than 1kbps / connection.

If you want voice (ISDN quality), you\'d have more like 64kbps / connection.

Maybe it\'s worth to take a look at text2voice thingys.
I know that text2voice stuff is far from perfect. But hey, no improvement without trial.
Furthermore, syntetic voices would fit the characters :D

At least voice for NPC should be possible.

I think it can be said that voice functionality is rather useless in a true MMORPG such as PS.  As stated, voice communication is great for FPS and RTS, where it can make it a lot easier to organize plans with your teammates.  I see little help that voice can add to the world of PS, seeing as many people would likely not be able to use it for one, and second because it would indeed ruin the RP experience.

Great Idea Rumble.  I use Team speak. it is a free download.   I recommend it to anyone that wants to use it.  We can create entire chat rooms and sub chat rooms etc..

This would be a great way to increase the feeling of the game.  lol  I dont think my character is speechless. but for some reason he has to speak and with his fingers.

I do not see why it has to be integrated into the game.
If e.g. guilds decide to use one of the many many many teamspeak-like applications, why not?

I agree though, that it would be best if it\'s only used for OOC conversation.
