Vulgarity in games
« on: February 18, 2004, 02:54:11 am »
I don\'t know how many people here watch XPlay on techtv. A little show about games in America. Well, it showed an import game called \'Sexy Beach 2\'. In it, you stalk girls around aparrently tropical enviroments, and shower them with gifts, like scantily clad bikinis, or things that don\'t even count as clothing, but as twine. Eventually, you got to \'touch\' them. Give them back rubs, thigh massages, tickle their belly, and any other sick little fetish limited only to how far one\'s mind can sink into the gutter. Farther along, you take them back to your place to test the springs on your matress.

Now, I\'m not a prude. I play GTA: Vice City, though I don\'t solicite hookers in the game, but how would I go around justifying playing that, and shooting down a game that\'s play control consists of \'looking\' at overly busted girls, then clicking on them. Does it even constitute as a game?

By technicality, yes it does. Personally, in my books, no it doesn\'t. I think gaming takes more than a foot fetish to play. But the question about GTA comes back up. Well, this might sound lame, but I think it can be justified since it actually takes some finess. Skill. efort. The other is digital porn. Perhaps that sounds hypocritical, maybe it is.

Either way, I find it sad that games have sunk to this level. Personally, I think it really started with DOA: Beach Voleyball.

Maybe I\'m looking at this from the wrong angle. I mean, anyone so incredibly pathetic as to buy a piece of trash like that obviously couldn\'t get a date, so maybe, ironically they need it.

To sum up, What the hell happened to games? I know with graphics improving, games can, and have become more mature since thye have the power to. But since when did mature  slowly eating popcicles and running slow motion through a sprinkler in a white shirt? Perhaps one of the most \'mature\' games I\'ve played is Harvest Moon. A personal favorite. Final Fantasy is a good example of maturity. For the most part. It focusses on telling stories and testing the might of the player. X-2 looks like a backslide.

look doa came WAY after sexy beach and those games. those games are japanese imports and the genre hasnt been introduced in the US. however they have been around a LONG time. I mean a LOOOONG time. Like 14 years at least. they started with drawings and anime and then got into video games and sexy beach is a new idea on having fully 3d games. They are part of the japanese culture now, and the reason why they exist is because sexuality is ALOT more open in japan. Prostitution is not only legal there but advised for older marraiges. As long as the man pays for the sex with money and not his affection. But mostly i have to say \"who cares?\" Some people really like those games and you have to respect that. I personally dont find them too much fun, but the next guy just might. Some people hate rpgs (like adam sessler the host of x play) and some love em (like us) the next guy just might think that his sexy beach 2 kicks all rpg\'s ass. But really who cares. he can do what he likes, hell i can surely do what i want (legal or illegeal) so its all fair.

But games are hardly going into a backslide. I feel games are just about to enter a 2nd golden age. Technology is going to let us not only play our games but experrience them. We will be fully immersed into our gaming and eventually it will be VERY hard to tell the difference. This gives me hopes and make me wanna freeze myself and play those games 40+ years later. but i dont particularly advise this as i am a bit skeptical :P. Well anyways like i was saying games are going to enter a new golden age. Games are entering a decline to only bound up again. The wait is in the technology, and definally not in unique ideas as this entire forum proves. We will have to wait and I must say as I end that alot of great games are on the horizon (halo 2, half life 2, doom 3) So i bid you farewel  fellow planeshifters, and a good(night, morning, afternoon, cheeto induced gaming binge)

Bah it\'s society in general. Sex sells! Come on TechTV is teaming up with PLayboy right now where you can vote for your favorite TechTV woman on Playboy. If that doesn\'t tell you something about where they think society and gamers are heading.

BTW I voted for Morgan Webb  :P

I have to admit, this game seems extremely low to me. There must be an audience for it, however, or it would not be made. I have to say I would agree with Whemy, and just say, \"who cares?\" I\'m not playing them, I don\'t play many FPS because I think they get repetetive, but that doesn\'t mean Billy Bob Joel doesn\'t like them. LOL, I cant imagine how repetetive I would find clicking on a girl to make her naked. After all, isn\'t that what pornography is for?

As for the gaming industry, I am wonering what direction it is headed. I remember the old classic\'s, like WC2 and AoE, and when I look back, I remember playing them for MONTHS without getting bored. Now, it seems I have to pick up a new game every month to keep me interested. As much as I love good graphics and newer technology, I think the old games really had more to offer. More effort had to be focused and making a crappy looking game fun. Good story lines and interesting gameplay. Now games seem to advertise their great graphics or numerous useless options.

teehee so did i.. shes hott.... lol why doesnt she make the same mistake as cat and put a pic on the web with her boobs showin... lol im such a perve...

*ahem* as for your problem dalec of finding quality games that last longer it really isnt the games is gamers in general. We are growing a tollerance to games in a way. games that seemed cool now if new or never been played would seem boring and dull. IE games that are pushed way past thier due dates like by 2 years really suck because they were meant for an audiene 2 years before. Every year the gaming industry has to put more into games to keep people liking them. Eventually we will reach a new point where games will be boring and new tech will arise to make games more interesting. Right now its online play. games are coming online now and they would seem very crappy in released offline with npcs or the such. just think about it, if every person you talk to on your online games werent real but npcs (kind of a conspiracing thought that would keep you up at night) how crappy would that game be? The next thing to make games fun is around the corner, but i sure as heck cant predict it, no one can really. But thats for the future and thats where we heading so i guess we will just have to wait.

Those are some pretty good points. And well taken.

When I said backslide, I didn\'t mean games in general, I meant the Final Fantasy franchise (which I personally think is, and I enjoy RPGs). I couldn\'t dream of arguing that games are entering a second golden age. Doom 3 looks freaky. All the better to blast away monsters. Some game idea\'s are revolutionary and involve sex. The Sims, for example. I don\'t play often, but I\'ve been known to binge.

I think about it now, and it\'s roles. Sexy Beach 2 includes beautiful women with lower back problems from carrying around their obviously implanted luggage. Who would pay these? People who have sexual or relationship issues. That comes to me playing Grand Theft Auto. I\'m a nice guy, so stepping out, gunning down gangsters, beating up pimps and robbing them, crashing vehicles, and running guns is a hoot for me. As, I suppose, that game is a blast for anyone willing to pay 50 bucks for the same sensation they could get off the internet.

I know how long sex has been in games. I downloaded a Commadore 64 emulator off the web and came across a site dedicated to adult CC64 games. I was frankly surprised to see how many there were. Mostly imported from Japan and Europe (horny Germans...). So I am aware, I guess it just irks me that that game is sitting next to Dues Ex somewhere in Japan. Maybe I\'m over reacting.

Anyway, I guess I\'m getting my point across. You pretty much have the same thoughts as me. Yeah, it\'s a game, I wouldn\'t play it. I\'m better than that. Someone would. Hey, if they enjoy it, more to them, I guess. Personally, I\'m playing a neat free sprite-based rpg-ish game at http://www.furcadia.com. It\'s not much, but I like it.

As far as immersion in gaming, I heard about a Mech game that costed like 200 dollars, but it came with a console you sat at, as if you were inside one. Cool. Now if only it were cheaper. Actually, I\'m surprised 3D eye-wear and sensory gloves aren\'t being used more int today\'s games. I could only dream about playing GTA from behind the wheels of an Infernum as I brutally ran down Hatians who have a nasty pentiant against me.

Anyway, I think you are right, though. Technology is getting better and cheaper. And more immersive. Dance Dance Revolution is my own addiction.

Umm whemy if you find any pics like that PM me :P

Sorry to get so OT but just had to throw that in.

Now tryig to get back on topic. As far as games like Sexy Beach and such go I always figured my option was to just not buy it. There has become quite a market for games like that and I just figure let the people who want to buy them buy them and I will stick to games that actually have a point and aren\'t based soley on sex appeal. The one thing that does seem to frustrate me though is that it does seem that you can have a very good game and the company publishing it feels they still have to throw sex appeal into it just for it to sell. I mean I would have played DOA 2 even without the sexy outfits thrown in because I thought it was a decent game not because I thought I was going to see a computer animated woman half naked.
Oh well enough rambling because I am tired and I feel like I am not even making sense to myself anymore LOL.

Hehe... I played Furcadia for about a day. Realised that it isn\'t actually free, and there was nothing to do but chat with people. :( So, I got bored and moved on.

Games are already using 3D and sensory technology. Black & White, for example, has support for using a glove to have full control over the ingame \'hand\'. Then you have such beauties as the EyeToy. I\'m sure you\'ve heard about it already. :)

It most certainly is. I\'m a big fan of DDR too... I\'ve spent more than a couple of hundred quid at the local leisure center practicing on songs such as Captain Jack on Expert mode... :D gathers quite a crowd, usually. *wonders why* *looks down* *ceases to wonder why*

DDR?  Wow...losers...my brother got the home thing for that, it\'s so sad, I\'m glad I\'m not around there anymore. :D

Fantasyfiend, were you the one complaining about television as well?  I personally don\'t think there is much of a difference in randomly shooting whoever the hell you want in a game or some animated girl being naked, either way I get bored of it because it\'s just a game.

wow i didnt know black and white could use a glove thing
that would make really hard to throw fireballs :(
most games are getting poorer and poorer
all the good games are those classics like unrealtournament (yay i make UT maps), halflife, jedi knight 1, relentless etc etc

poeple just run out of ideas for games
some good later games though would be
emperor: battle for dune (the best strategy game i have ever seen(listening to the music for it right now)), black and white (although a bit limiting in some ways), jedi knight: jedi academy (would be the best fps if you threw away the lightsabers), star wars: knights of the old republic (if only there was multiplayer *sigh*), and i cant forget my favourite hack and slash: Severance: blade of darkness (everything was done right in this game except maybe for the glitches in the physics engine)

games are ment to be fun and i dont see how playing with a female super model on your computer screen is fun. good games need to have balance and fairness, newbie and veteran modes, no cheap overpowering things like bfgs, good maps :D  (play halo for the worst maps that ever existed)

dont worry about people playing these low games. just forget about them and be glad you dont have friends who play those games.

Actually, yes. I was the one speaking out against society\'s inability to break their attention from a glowing box.

You really want to know what\'s differant between sex and violence? I don\'t even know that. I really don\'t know how to justify gunning down cops, while staring gawkeyed and some brain-dead bimbo.

Bear in mind, when I say that, I don\'t mean women. I mean the women in this game. Go to X Play\'s site, and check out the footage. The people who programmed this game created the illusion that girls have nothing better to do with their time than to let people watch them and giggle stupidly when your hand touches their knee. That creates a pretty sorry image of girls. Not that it really matters, because anyone retarded enough to put that on their game rack, doesn\'t have a snowball\'s chance in Hell with a girl anyway.

Then what you said about GTA. For me, the real differance here is skill required. The dictionary I have defines a game as something played for entertainment, I think a game is defined by a test of skill that\'s entertaining as well. It doesn\'t take much skill to reposition a camera behind a girl\'s can so someone can \'touch\' it. In GTA, you have to work to get away from the cops. It takes everything you got to escape the Military. If you buy GTA just to drive around at night and pick up hookers, than your kind of missing the point of the game (well, I guess you could play like that...). The point of this game is stare at silicon endowed girls eat a banana in slow motion. Dragon\'s Lair had more play depth than that. Besides, It was funny watching Dirk fall into the fire.

I didn\'t hear about the virtual glasses and gloves sucking. That\'s too bad. I really think it would be a step in the right direction for games.

Oh, and Kiern, you don\'t have to slam others for what they like to play. I stated how sad it was that games have come to this. If you read, I never put -anyone- down for what they played. If you wanted to play Micheal Jackson\'s Hide and Seek. That\'s your game. If someone wants to play Sexy Beach or DOA Beach Volleyball. Fine. Cool. It\'s not my thing. I would rather play something else. To each his or her own.

And it\'s still an annoying game
