Not necessarily :P

I really dont know if the idea has already been brought up. But what if *eyes go glassy*...
A starting player would only have a simple map of certain inhabited areas. This \'map\' would be displayed on the HUD, kinda like a radar map, only without dots or any other markers.
Maybe places where you have been would also be visible on the map (with some sort of \'fog of war\').
If you would have a map in your inventory (perhaps special map slots) the information on these maps would be added to your HUD map. The better the map (dependent on the creator\'s cartography skill), the more would be shown on it.
This might be a good way to integrate the maps made by the cartography skill with the HUD.

(ps the search on map+hud+cartography gave no results and map+hud gave no relevant threads :P)

There are 90 threads about maps.. and you can\'t find 1 ? :/

Anyways, I like the idea using maps as normal items that have to be bought by other players or NPC\'s the most.  I think the way that looks the most as normal maps IRL would be the best, and a lot more fun. Make maps if you have the skills and buy them if you don\'t... not some kind of weird auto-map feature.

I have only one thing to say.

If you want a map, go make your own. Pick up a pencil and draw a paper map for yourself. It certainly isn\'t more difficult than that. And if you do so, you will be able to see exactly where you have been, and where you need to go to find the places you haven\'t been. Just like a radar.

If any of you can\'t do that, I will personally force Moogie into deleting all posts so I can be the first person to call you stupid. :D

Edit: Oh wait, Moogie doesn\'t mod the wish list... Umm... Venge then!

what do you guys need a built-in radar map for?

Don\'t you have some sense of orientation?

Of course you get lost at first, but after some time, when you\'re familiar with aplace, you know where things are. Or ask someone for directions :D

It\'s like with the dungeon in MB. Everyone got lost the first time. Some asked, some spawned and some seeked on their own untill they found the exit.

It would be cool if you could buy a paper map. Just a piece of paper. It shouldn\'t show you your current position.
Look at the surrounding (roads, rivers, mountains, etc) and try to figure your location out.
Maybe you could afford a compass to see where North is.

And direction signs would be nice. Maybe even a big placard with a map and your current position. Such a placard could be in a common place, like the plaza in MB where the statue is.

So you\'d need a sense of orientation in order to find your way through the map.

You could hire a guide or if you\'re familiar with a place, you can act as a guide yourself and gain some money.

that\'s what i\'d love to see :D and not some kind of cyber-GPS-radar map in the corner of the screen.

i agree with aineko

the Ultima online style of map is what i like (use cartography skill.. gives u a line drwing map on a peice of parchment... higher skill gives u a choice of scales)

makes a realistic \'ye olde\' style map.. no location marked... observe yer surroundings to pinpoint yer location

i would however like to be able to annotate the map.. so u can mark on places that are intersting to u (eg Bob\'s house)

i would like to see it like morrowind but without the map
when you walk ouside town there would be a few signs telling you what path to take to reach a certain place
you could also ask the npcs for directions

Yes radar would not be good at all. I dont even want an in-game map. Exploration would be eliminated if you could see on the map where all the secret passages and cracks in the walls are. Its not realistic, and if people dont want to get lost, then they can get familiar with the surroundings.

Im not against cartographers though, the cartographers would have to know all the secret places to map them right? So they actually sell their information that they have collected. Maps made by cartographers would be an item that you can open and look at, a map in the corner of the screen that is always there defeats the whole Exploration aspect of the game.

Thats all I have to say :D

i think if the devs did put an ingame map or radar in in conjunction with the cartography skill (which the char creation screens suggest they plan to implement).... then i think they overdosed on a whole loada \'wha.... erm....duuuuh....*scrathes head*....arrgh\' stuff

in other words it would be pretty silly to create a skill then render it useless

Exactly what I was thinking, if they only way to have a map was a paper map, what good would the cartography skill be? Ofcourse, sense of direction and memory will get you around most places you have been before (everyone knows the Hydlaa dungeon like the back of his/her hand by now) but when you go somewhere you havent been before, you wouldnt want to run into a group of 200 trepors, would you? That is where cartographers could come in handy, they could mark \"look out! large number of trepors!\" on their self-made map and sell it. Some people just cant be bothered to \'explore the world\', that\'s why IRL people buy road maps and car navigation systems. :P

Yes, I assume a cartographer could put that on a map. That would be really cool.

Anyway, I don\'t think locations of other players should be shown. I also don\'t think your location should be shown. That way, the quality of the map will matter and it will be possible to get lost.

for finding players there should be a tracking skill whereby u can discover where they have been recently.. ie pick up their trail

Tracking skill! I agree there :D That would be pretty cool. And not only for other players, it could be for... pretty much anything. Monsters, NPCs (if they move), etc.
