« on: March 06, 2004, 03:35:31 pm »

Sounds pretty useless to me, but if you want to do it so bad, have fun..

btw, you can\'t use any art(including the hud) without persmission from the devs..

What is so wrong with CrystalSpace and what is so good in Torque ? Do you plan to make a new port for each new version of PS ? If you can code you better join the PS team.

I personally like TGE better than Crystal Space, but it has been awhile since I used CS. The thing that TGE has going for it is that there is now a shader engine in development that so far doesnt require too much change over. The tools for TGE are getting better and better every month.

I was curious (I found out about this project today) why this wasnt originally created in TGE, I\'m sure if someone contacted them in the first place you could have figured out something with them

TGE has now a shader engine in development? CS has support for shaders already (CG shaders and others). As to the tools CS has no problem in that area. See the PlaneShift levels and models for proof of that. Both 3dsmax and blender are supported very well.

Did TGE even exist when PlaneShift 3D started?

jung: like tang said, if you can code why don\'t help PS progress forward?

Every new programmer thinks that he can make his own EQ. Sure i was also thinking that when i was new to game dev, i planned to make an RPG like Dungeon Seige, on my own with bare DX. I worked for 9 months and i haven\'t even completed the engine.

I\'ve seen 100s of projects rise and fall without even getting a single demo out. It\'s complete foolishness to make you\'r own games (unless you have 5-10 talented, devoted ppl on your hand) when there are many good projects available on internet where we can help.

PS 3D started 5 years ago. And we are progressing very good. It maybe slow, but look at:
Development History
And see how much PS devs work on it.

We ( PS Team) are living and progressing thanks to strong commitment of Talad , Acraig & Vengeance. Being actively developed for 5 years is no joke.

Talad: Don\'t build a new game! Join the crew at http://www.planeshift.it to build THE game :)

DivineLight, leave the kiddo alone. He can do what he wants. He\'s talented? He has a talented team? Very good, maybe something interesting will come out.
Of course, you have to be an idiot to start a conversion of a game that\'s still in pre-alpha, that still needs a lot of work put into it, and many other things, but this is another story. And it\'s also pointless.
Anyway, DivineLight, your post is kinda funny, but as a response to it, aham ...

Lol, It sounds like: Hi, I\'ve stolen the source code and making my own game. Is this normal? I guess this open-source philosophy should be rethought ,lol.

The entire idea of Open Source is that people can use the code to make other projects. In fact at this moment there are at least two other projects that use PlaneShift source code (LessShift and Virtual Annelov). This is a good thing.

OpenSource is good. No stealin if you use PS code as base or refrence or even if you don\'t touch it, you just create content and enter it in DB and viola, you have a different game.

Annah: Yeah My post went a bit funny. but it\'s good i gave a good leason in a good way. For years i was trying to find a project that lives as long as this and is as active.
I joined some DX Engine dev team, i was writing GUI support but the team broke when i have done 75% of the GUI.

I learned it\'s always a bad idea to start you\'r own MMORPG; my first game that i completed was a TicTacToe. and it took me pretty darn time to complete it. but still options screen is not done :(.
TicTacToe

Yes, but it may backstab splitting donators into several fragments, which would not will have happened in a less open philosophy. The speed of developement depends primarily on donations which allocate extra time to the developers, who thus are less dependant on their primary source of income. But sure, open source is a great thing in the ethical sense and a great advancement to computer technology on a global scale.

Donations? What donations? As far as I know nobody in the PS team has received donations so far. We don\'t do it because of donations. We program on PS because we like to do that. Also most of us are already working maximum we can on PS. Giving us money (even though that would be nice of course :-) would not make us work harder. Most are already working max.

Jorrit,
Hmmm, but why not initiate a donation process, it doesnt hurt... In the worst scenario nobody will pay. The point is that with adequate donation you could make at least one person work full-time or \"some part-time - part-time\". I guess a donation link would not disillusion any gamer. Not my business, I\'m just surprised.
