really new to PS
« on: March 15, 2004, 12:39:41 am »
Ok, I was bored today so I start surfing the net and found Planeshift.  I\'m guessing that PS is pretty new and was just curious about it.  First of all, it\'s totally free?  How can this be?  I\'ve been around the MMORPG block a couple time, I\'ve played EQ and SWG.  Beta tested Ragnarok Online and Memesis Online as well as played free trials of Planetside and many more.
How new is PlaneShift?  I\'ve never seen it online until I woke up today with a hang-over and starting browsing the net.
Is it in alpha or beta?  Or are we playing the fully developed version?
Is PS a fun game?  Like I said, I\'ve seen alot of MMOs.  How does this one stack up to the rest?  In the mean time, I\'ll be downloading the game.  Can\'t wait to try this game out.=)

Most of your answers can be answered by reading the website, please do this as there are loads of people asking the same question all the time(is it free? how? etc.). get\'s kinda repetetive after a while ;)

The FAQ is a good place to start, you can find it here: http://www.planeshift.it/community_faq.html

There are also a few Player made FAQs, try looking through the forums for stickied (IMPORTANT:) threads, they\'re on the top of the page.

Hiya, Welcome to PS.

PlaneShift has existed since 1994, but has only begun 3D development since \'01. The current version of the game is 0.020.10, which is a Pre-Alpha Technical Demonstration.

This project is being developed by volunteers across the globe. Because the PlaneShift Team is not a company, they arn\'t paid, thus they have no budget to uphold by charging players cash for their game. This is also an open-source game to which anybody can contribute.

PS is fun, if you don\'t expect much. The community here is wonderful, something you won\'t find in any other MMORPG. Currently, the only activities ingame are the Crystal Hunt (pick up randomly spawning crystals, which are money atm, to buy decorative weapons), two quests (talk to NPCs, no reward), and bughunting. You can talk to other players and explore the world also.

The next version, codenamed Crystal Blue, will include basic fighting, trade, progression and crafting systems. There will be monsters and the ability to spar with other players. You can expect to see this version within the next month or so, but the official word is that no warning will be given prior to the release, and no specific release date will be given. The developers don\'t want to let people down again by promising a date (it was December of last year, but has been muchly delayed) and then failing to meet it.

Hope this answers your questions :) Have fun.

Wow, been reading alot about PS now.  D/loading on 56k sucks but it\'ll work=)  As of now, PS is 3d chat room but it is currently evolving and I really happen to enjoy patches and updates not to mention the community like you said, I\'ll probably be around for a good long while.

A little background on myself:

I live in Goodwell, OK and go to college at OPSU where I am going for a CIS (Computer Info. Systems) degree and possibly a graphics minor.  Big fan of RPGs, FPSs, and anime(My TV never leaves Cartoon Network).  Real name is Josh Luethy, I\'m 20 and eternally bored.  That should just about cover it all.  Ask me anything you want.

Good for you! Umm... basically, yeah, the only advice I can give is to read as much as possible. No one tolerates people who ask redundant questions. Other\'n that, get to know people, collect crystals, and maybe join a guild if you\'re a \"joiner\". lol Good luck.

Well Hello every one.  I am new my self.  I wont lie to you... to me the heart of any good RPG is to hunt and kill monsters and to gain in experince and money to learn new skills and buy better equipment and weapons along with having relations with other people in the game.  How ever at the moment I under stand that there is no fighting which is a bummer, but that it will be implemented soon which is great.  The graphics are impressive for being free and not even out of beta yet.

I will give the crystal finding and quests a try..., but I don\'t know how long that will keep my interest... but when fighting gets in I am sure I will be entertained for a long time.  Great job so far.

I disagree with you completely on this point.
The ultimate objective of any RolePlaying Game is full immersion.
To roleplay in my view is to add something to the game world.  Something that hack\'n\'slashing does not do...
The key to manipulative bargaining is to ask for something twice as big as what you want, then smile and nod when you are talked down to your original wish. You are still young, my apprentice, and have much to learn in the ways of the force. -UtM

she means bugs (mistakes) in the game engine... :D
(like if you can pick up the same crystal again and again without that it vanishes but your crystal count in your iventory rises every time you pick it up - would be a typical bug)

it isn\'t part of the game itself, but if you find some it would be nice to report them :)
