well i would say illusions studio\'s gmax is VERY professional and free. so i recomend it although i cant really use it since i have NO experience in 3d moddeling. im trying to get around to reading the tutorial, but i like my 2d stuff just fine.

Wings is just a 3-d modeling program, but is probably easier to learn then Blender.  However Blender is a full featured 3-d suite capable of high level animation, effects, and modelling.  But that would take a lot of learning.

Gmax is the free version of 3dsMAX, which is a stripped version that is mostly useful for practicing (and implementing in a few cases) graphics that would be used in a game.  Maya also has a \"Personal Learning\" edition, that is pretty much full-featured, but anything you render in it will get a big watermark.
Ninjas have feelings too.  Mostly they feel like dancing.

My advice would be Blender.  Used both Wings3D and gmax but I find Blender to me much better.

I use Gmax alot but I\'ll be the first to admit it sucks when your trying to find a way to port the file into another format.

So if you can learn blender instead (its alot more confusing) go for it in the long run you\'ll be happier.

Of course if your going to buy 3d studio max somwhere up the track I suggest using Gmax as it is a great way to learn how to use 3d studio max.
