Types of sword - particularly claymores
« on: March 29, 2004, 01:50:54 pm »
Perhaps we could have swords for stabbin\' and swords for slashin\'?

The Scottish claymore for example, has a blunt edge and a sharp point. You club people (or monsters) with it and either beat them to death with the pommel while you hold the blade or you stab them with it, whereas, something like a scimitar you slash at people with.

Any takers?

of course claymore goes under \'great swords\' category... it\'s one type of weapon in category itself...

and theres always the barstard sword ( mind me )

and every japs fave the kantana ( SP )

but for me i prefer pole-arm weapons (maces & fails inculded) though theres not much variation on the western front until you look to towards medevil eastern type weaponary you see that most of the strandard weapons for armys are pole-arm classes ( all but japan) though swords are nice pole-arm weaps are more practical ( longer reach and they work better in a shield wall formation)

nice idea id like to see that happen but still its up to the devs isnt it

KATANA\'S!!!! some nice 1-h katana\'s and some nice 2-h katana\'s:p not a single european medieval sword is stronger then a katana. Would love to wield those. They are made for both stabing and slashing, have been made out of the strongest metal, are almost impossible to damage and fast as lightning due to their weight that is extremely low.... god i am in l(l)ve with those.... if i can dual-wield those mighty weapons.... oowwwww... can hardly wait to see if the katana\'s are implemented, and if they are then to see if their speed and strength are in good balance with the power of those in real world...

Much rather use a Rapier or Gladius myself, but the bastard sword and claymore are alright for if you are just looking to pummel a enemy quickly :P

Exactly!  Why have all of these bronze swords and the like when we can have many different sorts of weapons, some different than others, with certain specialized uses?  Heck, why not make Planeshift original weapons with unique names and appearance?

i\'m more of a blunt object guy my self. Maces, Morning stars, Sceptors, flails, Warhammers 1 and two handed.

but i also enjoy Tridents and spear type weapons. I\'m hoping planeshift in the future with have a plethora  of diffrent weapon types

games with limited weapon types really lose alot of there fun factor

a good scythe would also be nice.... with a black robe.... walking over the battlefield... would make nice screenies:P
Some nice slashing with that wep... think spear type or axe type wep is the right category.

What I\'m getting at it that instead of having a great swords category and a long swords category etc. like Baldurs Gate, each weapon should be taken for what it is:

A claymore style sword you would do barely any slashing damge by slashing with it. You would have to stab with it or crush with it.

Likewise you would not slash with a typical dagger - you stab with it.

On (in) the other hand you might have a scimitar-style sword. This would be primarily a slashing weapon and you might find it a bit ineffectual stabbing with it.

I just think this should be reflected in Planeshift. Perhaps we should go so far as to completely do away with traditional weapon types like spear-type, missile-type and short-sword type, because in reality, there is a huge difference between different types of short sword.

The criteria for deciding on types should at least be different from previous RPGs.

You should be able to create a sword from scratch yourself. And I dont mean just a few basic differences from person to person. I mean a really in depth weapon creation system. Where you choose the shape, weight, curves, the hilt on the sword, the length of the handle etc. And dont stop there go into even more detail on the catagories ive listed. So its only a rare occurance that you see 2 weapons that look alike. Then also let your sword be effected by the world around it. For example you might chance upon something or someone that can enchant it or improve/modify it in some way. Also implement a system that puts you in the situation where you actually have to care for your weapon. Like sharpen it on a grindstone or something similar (or different). Keep it polished so it doesnt rust and become blunt and weak. Im sure theres many other things that could be added to this list.

I wouldn\'t mind having a wood sword, metal handle sharp wood end that when you stab someone you can make the wood stick into their body and pull another end out from like a quiver or whatever they are called! Its almost like a archer/ swordsman, but without the bow!

i wouldnt mind haveing customized swords but not everyone can smith, so they will have to rely on other people to make theirs....so a couple of people will still be getting identical swords

bah that would be a little complicated for the creators each getting a unique weapon to call their own, unless the power in the sword is the same but the image is different! That could work just make a place to send in your images and wait for them to upload them into the game and have a command like /set sword #101 or something like that, could work!
