starting a private server
« on: March 31, 2004, 06:01:41 pm »
i know this is already somewhere, but i had a question, how do I start one, used search and only found a thread of som1 asking permission, maybe is it an idea to let players \"download\" there character from the main server so they can continue on private server, and upload it again.

->->->NOTE:THIS IS ABSOLUTLY NOT MEANT FOR CHEATING, MORE FOR NOT ANNOY OTHER PPL WITH FAST CONNECTION.<-<-<-

For ppl who dont believe me, i can program a bit and i think i know a way \"block\" this.

Well , the problem with private servr is that all the art and content is the property of planeshift , so you have to create all the content by yourself , this can in fact take really long , especially for characters , so if you want new content , it would be better to join the planesift team and help them on modeling ( i think they mainely need help there),  if you want to know how to create models and content , you can click on my sig, if you find info on some missing information, mail me those, i ll add them to my site.
I did finaly found a work :))

ow...

So if i understand you, u say alll maps, models and such are stacked on the server, not on your hard disk. This would mean you only have an engine on your pc and no models at all???

The maps and the models are on the client.  I think the idea is for us to keep all main servers \'official\'.  This is for a couple reasons.

1) We don\'t want to shard the community.  All efforts should be made to get as many people together in one \'area\' as possible.  This also protects our image as a team.

2) Quality control.  We want to make sure that any server that is running can satisfy our needs.

3) Protection.  A lot of the data is server driven so that means quest/item/player data is all stored on the server.  Any server that is \'official\' has to be a trusted one to be part of the \'PlaneShift\' network of servers. ( When we get to that point of shared servers. Is just the one main server now ).

Now this doesn\'t mean you can host your own server and play with a private group of friends in your own universe.  Infact this may be a good way to test content before patching it to the main systems.   But we don\'t want people to annouce it to the world that they are running their own PlaneShift servers for the above reasons.  However, if you can provide your own models/maps/data you can probably create your own game with minimal changes to the code base.

We don\'t provide binaries of the server code but you can get all the data out of CVS and build your own server.
