It could work, actually.
First of all, you would become a public figure, that would influence (in good or in bad) your social status.
As a class or job, actors could have a bonus in casting certain illusion type spells or even in \"inspiring\" party members before battle.
Also, your acting skills could be employed in advertising (guilds, religious factions, etc) or in various quests that imply deceit, impersonations, etc.
Maybe the planeshift actors would gain with experience the ability to morph his own look, to perfectly imitate voices and accents and so on , making them great for spying and thieving.
How about that for role-playing? A charming rogue singing and reciting for the ladies, a chameleonic thief able to make you believe he is your own side-kick then rob you blind...
(Oh...and...I am an actor in real life...
